Overall, this rod was fantastic for the price. I bought this rod to use with my Hardy Silex, and the Compre was a perfect fit. The Compre is a little stiffer than a Clarus, but i usually BC cast with the silex, and the stiffness helps me launch heavier weights a bit easier. The sliding rings are way more forgiving compared to something like a Lamiglas Redline, and the guides are pretty spiffy. There are obviously better, more expensive centerpin rods out there, but this rod will be able to do just about whatever you want it to for a decent price.

Not a bad rod for the price. My only complaint is that the reel seats are too large / too loose… My reel has fallen off my rod a handful of times because of this… Into the river or on the rocks..

First of, this is a COMPLETELY different rod than the 13' Clarus, but in a lot of ways, I think that's a good thing. The guides are higher quality, it's physically lighter, and it balances well with my 5" Kingpin which is not a super heavy reel. The Clarus was rated as an 8-12 but fished more like a 4-8 and was generally noodle. In certain situations (Erie tribs for instance), that's exactly what's needed, but on some of the larger Lake Ontario tributaries I fish, this is a MUCH better rod. It truly is an 8-12, so keep that in mind if you're looking to buy one. This is a big river rod with a lot of backbone. I'd recommend it for big water steelhead, and it seems like it would do well as a salmon rod too. It still has a nice parabolic bend to it, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're running lighter than 8 lb. leader. If Shimano released a 13' 4-8 version, they'd truly have all the bases covered and pretty much own the market for cheap float rods in the Great Lakes.

It’s pretty upsetting that this is what shimano replaced the clarus rod with. Besides the better guides, this rod is much heavier, has a much stiffer action, and overall feels cheaper than the clarus did. Definitely disappointed with this one. Wish they would’ve just revamped the clarus line instead.
