At a Glance: Salmon & Steelhead Rods
When it comes to these strong fighting fish, the right fishing rod matters! Salmon and Steelhead are a favorite in the angling world for the challenge they present. Anglers get to try a wide variety of techniques, including trolling, baitcasting, spincasting, and fly fishing. Both Salmon and Steelhead are known for being heavy fighters. When you do hook one, you need to let it tire before you try to reel it in. They use their powerful bodies to thrash and dart rapidly through the water when they are hooked, which if handled incorrectly, could result in a snapped line.
Due to their size and sheer fighting power, it is recommended that you always use a seven to ten-foot medium to medium-heavy fishing rod when you are trolling or casting from shore. However, both Salmon and Steelhead are known for striking lightly and letting go quickly. Because of this, rods also need to be sensitive, which is why many anglers choose light to medium power rods in tributaries.
