The Rapala Jigging Shadow Rap differs slightly from the original, making it more attractive to lethargic fish. While the original falls fast and darts to instigate bites from aggressive fish, the Jigging Shadow Rap features a slower, smooth gliding action that tempts sluggish fish. Lighter than the original and with a broader silhouette, this slower-moving, bigger meal gives lazy fish a reason to expend the energy to go after it, whether they are suspended or close to the bottom.
The 3 1/2 in. Rapala Shadow Jigging Rap bears no front hook, which you may have noticed as different from the original, and an oversized tail hook. The lack of a front hook helps keep the Rapala Shadow lightweight and aids gliding. A VMC treble hook connects to the body by two split rings to improve movement and gain better hookups. The Shadow model comes in modern internal metal finishes, perfect for belly-flashing action. When you're marking fish that don't want to chase and have both Rapala jigging lures in your tackle box, the Rapala Jigging Shadow Raps give them what they want!

Rapala Jigging Shadow Rap
Haven’t used the Shadow Rap yet; however, I am looking forward to doing so this summer on a walleye fly-in trip out of Red Lake, Ontario, to Goose Lake, with Loon Haunt Outposts.

I jigged these a few times this past year and maybe not the best test yet. Seem promising but didn't have enough time on the right bite to really compare.
What is different about the Rapala Jigging Shadow Rap vs other vertical jigging baits?
The Rapala Jigging Shadow Rap may slightly resemble the original Jigging Rap and other vertical baits, but it’s certainly not the same. The Jigging Shadow Rap has a much slower rate of fall characterized by a smooth gliding action, making it irresistible to big, lazy fish looking for an easy meal. The Jigging Shadow Rap is 9cm or 3 1/2“ long, so the same length as an original #9 Jigging Rap, but with a completely different larger, wider profile. This bait also has no front hook, keeping the Jigging Shadow Rap lightweight and gliding slowly and smoothly. The Rapala Jigging Shadow Rap’s laser-sharp VMC treble hook is attached by 2 split rings, allowing the hook to move more freely and aiding in landing percentage. Needless to say, this isn’t just another vertical jigging bait!
Is the Jigging Shadow Rap just for Ice Fishing?
Although a deadly ice fishing bait, the Rapala Jigging Shadow Rap is just as effective in open water. The Jigging Shadow Rap can even be cast and hopped along the bottom, similar to how one would fish a blade bait, or jigged vertically underneath the boat. Look for the arches on your sonar, drop the Jigging Shadow Rap down, and hang on! Sometimes lethargic fish in a neutral mood will spook when a heavy, fast-falling bait is dropped right on their heads, especially in the summertime. This is where the Jigging Shadow Rap shines. This bait’s slow, gliding fall will catch the attention of those inactive fish rather than spooking them. It’s a good idea to have a jigging shadow rap in your box all months of the year!
What color Jigging Shadow Rap should I buy?
Well, there really isn’t a bad color in this lineup; however, there’s a time and a place when each one shines. The color you choose will largely be dependent on the species you’re fishing for, water and weather conditions, and the forage in your lake. If there are lots of juvenile perch, bluegills, or other panfish in your body of water, colors such as Glow Tiger, Black Yellow Red, Glow, Glow Slimy Lime, Nordic Perch, and Live Perch will probably excel. If the forage base is primarily bait fish such as emerald shiners, gizzard shad, or smelt, start with colors such as Blue Silver, Glow Pink Squirrel, Halloween, Purpledescent, Silver, or Live Smelt. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. In stained water, black or very bright colors stand out and are more easily visible to fish, while in clear water you may want to go with more natural colors. Long story short, make things easy on yourself and just get every color to try!
