Birthday gift for hubby!
by Wife of Mike. -
I ordered this reel as a birthday gift for my husband. (Of course he gave me more than "subtle" hints!) The reel is perfect and just what he wanted. Thank you to Fish USA for making this shopping experience so easy for me and so pleasing for my husband.

I really do not have the experience that I need to rate this reel. Heck it is the first CP I have ever owned so take this short review with that in mind. The reel seems well made and turns freely. Never using another CP before I think that the start up may be a little slow but I cannot judge that for sure. I say that because when i give it a little boost when starting the cast it seemed to cast better.if i got to happy i would get a heck of a professional overrun. I used it for about 4 hours a day for five days and have no complaints at this time.
Very good product
My son handed this reel to me because he wanted another fancier model. I have the simple grey colored version, spooled with 10 lb Raven main Line only. I use it from Oct to April regardless of weather (well below 0 usually) for salmon and steelhead fishing in Ontario. I have absolutely no complaints to make, and find it a real pleasure to fish with. Of course I had to learn how to use it properly, but I found the learning curve to be quick, intuitive and easy without any help needed or stuff to read. It is quite technical, akin to proper fly fishing in difficulty (IMHO). In brief: great looks, impeccable finish and craftsmanship, irreproachable functioning in any weather, easy to clean and maintain, more than ample capacity ... etc. The only issue we had is that the central screw lightly tightened (to ensure free spinning) fell off in the water and was lost. We had to get a new one. If we tighten it enough to avoid this kind of problem, it will not spin freely. So while I fish I have to check all the time to make sure it is not coming off which is a bit annoying. My son does not feel the "better" model is so much better, but the money is gone, for these things are, methinks, a bit overpriced given their simplicity. Durability: seems very solid, no plastic or otherwise weak parts Smoothness: for sure, even without lubrication, if the central screw is not tight. Easy casting: I still have some practice to do. Reliable: so far absolutely Line tangling: Line will often slip out from the side, but it's not very annoying.
raven matrix center pin reel

All I can say is I am very impressed with this reel. I have had a couple of custom reels made, & this little matrix can roll with the best of them. Thumbs up raven.
Pin to Win
Knowledgeable guide friend turned me on to Raven Matrix. You can't get more reel for less than 2x the price. Seems VERY durable and the closed design should keep most grit out. Plus, it's a great looking reel!
Good reel, good price

Spend the extra money and get the larger arbor, longer drifts
I own several raven reels and have no complaints. They work flawlessly. Choose raven tackle for all of your steelhead fishing gear.
Raven or nothing
Raven centerpin reels are 100% the best centerpins on the market, no questions asked. Raven carries the bronze/titanium matrix which is perfect for the intermediate angler eager to learn the centerpin method or the advanced, veteran centerpin angler. All XL models are perfect for fishing larger rivers due to the greater line capacity and faster retrieve. Owning several models myself ranging from the bronze matrix to the limited edition XL, I have found zero problems with craftsmanship, design, or mechanics of any Raven model. If you are looking for a new method of river fishing or looking to upgrade reels, I strongly suggest you give Raven centerpin reels a try, you won't be disappointed.
Very good reel, but one small thing

I've been using this reel several times a week for the past month and I like almost everything about it. I upgraded the bearings to ABEC7 Bocas, so it spins like a dream - no problem there. The start up is fine with heavier floats (8g+), but I've never tried it with anything smaller. I really like the ported design that allows me to retrieve the drift with my index finger. I'll never go back to an enclosed reel face. I also really like the way the jet black version looks. My only complaint is that the coating is so smooth and the rim of the spool so narrow that with cold and wet hands it's difficult to brake at the end of a cast or when setting the hook. Sometimes, I can't get my fingers to put enough pressure on the rim to stop it. If the rim were a little flatter (it's completely rounded over) or textured it would be much easier. Similarly, it's hard to get any feedback on the speed of the spool when your hands start to get numb because of the smoothness.

I have the fully ported 4.75" black model. I've been using it almost daily for the past month, and I like almost everything about it. My only complaint is that the rim of the spool is so narrow and smooth that it's tough to brake it during a cast or while setting the hook. If my fingers are cold or wet I can't get enough pressure on the spool to make it stop spinning. If the rim were a little flatter or textured it would help out a lot. Other than that, it spins like a dream and does what it's supposed to do.
Awesome reel, especially for beginners

Matrix xl ported black - Upgraded the bearings w abec 7 ceramic bearings and custom finger pieces and boom i have a pin that is lighter, more comfortable and equally as functional as a Milner or CPR reel for less money.
I picked up an MXRXSE at the store in Fairview a couple of months ago and I’m super glad I did. The ported face and enclosed back means that i can spin it with a finger and it dries quickly, but I can still set it down without getting dirt in it. It spins well, but I’ll probably switch to hybrid ceramic bearings at some point just because I can’t not tinker. The larger diameter of the XL makes more of a difference than I expected. Thanks Josh for steering me that way! Another genius feature is the tapered handles. I haven’t had any issues reeling in fish, but the line never gets hung up on them!
