Product Details

The Nils USA Hand Auger makes quick work of thick, midwinter ice with a one-piece, high-chromium steel cutting head that stays sharper longer than standard auger blades. The curved blade design slices efficiently through hard ice with minimal downward pressure, making it ideal for anglers chasing perch, walleye, or lake trout on frozen lakes. Its offset handle layout increases torque transfer directly to the cutting head, making drilling faster and smoother with less fatigue. Featuring a cushioned grip for comfort and a folding handle for compact transport, this auger delivers exceptional strength, control, and convenience. Each comes powder-coated blue with a red head and includes a protective cover to guard the cutting surface when stored.

  • One-piece cutting head made from high chromium steel for superior durability
  • Curved blades cut efficiently through thick ice with minimal effort
  • Offset handle increases torque for smoother drilling
  • Folding handle for easy transport and compact storage
  • Cushion grip handle provides added comfort
  • Compatible with Nils USA power auger powerheads

I've owned a Nils Convertible for 3 years now and am still impressed with the durability of their cutter heads. Having gone thru a number of hand augers and one oversized gas auger, this is hands down the best auger I've ever owned, or ever used. I have bad shoulders, so the ease in which the nils cuts is a real plus. I bought the convertible so I could attach my Milwaukee Fuel M18 permanent magnet drill to it. The last few trips out last year had me drilling 40 plus holes thru 24" of ice in about 12 seconds. All on about 40% of my 5AH battery. The auger and drill combined still didn't cost what an Ion costs, and I've got the bonus of having a really nice drill around for home projects. Should my drill fail for whatever reason, I can still operate the auger manually....and it will still out-cut the eskimo/strikemaster/mora competition! In a nutshell, If you've got the budget, buy the Nils. You won't be disappointed.

Best Hand Auger I've Ever Used

Posted by Dawgone on June 12, 2019

By far the best hand auger I've ever used other than the 6" Nils I already have. Right now we have 18 - 20 inches of Ice . This auger punches thru with little effort and no down pressure.

Using a 20V Max DeWalt Hammer Drill and a Clam Plate connected to the Nils hand auger via a Clam to Nils adapter found on ebay and you have the perfect lightweight electric power auger. Take along a spare battery and you are good to go for alot of holes. Easy to use and in the unlikely event that you run out of battery power you can switch to manual mode where the Nils design and quality lets you drill quickly with minimal physical effort. I love this set up. My son has an ION and prefers to use my auger setup when we hit the ice together.

3rd year using this auger. Teamed up with a Dewalt 20 volt brushless drill this thing rocks. Went ice fishing 10 times this winter with a 4.0Ah battery, usually drilling 4 or 5 holes per trip. I wanted to see how long the battery would last. Never charged or changed the battery all winter. What a combo... still had 1/2 battery life left over..

I have the 8". Few yrs back in NJ we had 18+" of ice and I was blowing through it with the nils hand auger. You have to take care of the blades. Respect the value and it'll treat you well. I avoid dirty ice with it so I don't nick the blade. Also, be conscious of where you're drilling so you don't bury it into mud or rocks. I purchased an extra blade head in case the one I've been using for the last 3 yrs starts to dull. But even after 3 seasons of use I can still shave with the original head! You won't be disappointed by this hand auger!
