Mike's Salmon Eggs are perfect for Trout. Rainbow's typically respond aggressively to this bait. White (or Natural) and Orange (Cheese-Bait) are my favorites. The Atlas Mike's Shrimp Eggs are also always in my creel. If I had to choose one color Mike's eggs it would be the Pink Shrimp Eggs. I fish them by 'drift fishing' free flowing streams. I most often rig them by putting 2 eggs on a #8 hook using 4 lb test mono. Nothing fancy, just enough weight to occasionally bump bottom. Depending on conditions this is usually 1 or 2 B or BB split shot. I have tried single eggs on smaller salmon egg hooks but have found that 2 eggs on a #8 baitholder tends to outperform. Cast upstream and across the current. Hold the rod tip high and track the drift with the rod as it comes past you. Gradually lower your rod tip as the drift passes you to maximize time and distance in the water. Focus on the most natural drift possible --- not dragging the line cross-current or up current. At times in slower moving stretches of water, I have presented these with absolutely no split shot and had great results. The trick (if there is one...) is to discern 'bottom bumps' from a fish picking up the eggs. You have to get the feel for it and be ready to set the hook because many trout will strip the eggs or let go in heavy current within 1 or 2 seconds. Try it --- You'll like it! In addition to Rainbow's I have caught many stocked and holdover or naturally born browns and brookies on these eggs... particularly the Cheese Bait Orange ones. The eggs I have ordered from FishUSA have always been fresh and firm, and stay on the hook well. Keep in mind that these do have a limited shelf life, and within a season open bottles tend to degrade, getting soft and stinky. At this point, they do not stay on the hook well and it is time to replace them. Do not allow them to sit in warm or sunny locations or they will degrade even faster.
