Sometimes, especially at a small lake in the Trinity Alps, the 1/8 oz. Crackle Frog has been the only thing I could catch fish on.

This trusted spoon has been a go to lure for anglers for decades. My grandfather swore by them on pike trips to Canada in the 1950s and 1960s. I use the 1/32 oz. Spoon when fishing Japanese style fixed line Keiryu type rods. I have caught trout, bass, pan fish, and last year an Atlantic Landlocked Salmon, the first of my life! The Pearl, Chartreuse and Red Dot are killer colors. The old standby Red and White still fools many fish. Amazing, durable lures that, even at the tiny size, will last a lifetime. In my mind, the best lure ever made.

Floating across a small murky pond in my old canoe, I tie on my ever trusty red and white Daredevle. My absolute go-to. As I make a cast, I watch that ol scratched up and well used spoon sail through the air, then bwoooop, Splash down. I begin to make the retrieve. While doing so, I give the tip of my pole a twitch every now and then to give my lure a flutter. Out of the dark murkiness I see a wide gaping mouth with gnarly set of teeth explode out of the water and completely swallow my favorite piece out of my arsenal. As I set the hook, the crazed saw-tooth-pickie flailed about in an attempt to throw the hook but was unsuccessful. This failed attempt seemed to further agitate the ol pickie and its efforts intensified, but I won. I flop him into the canoe and remove my favorite lure before releasing him back into the murky abyss.
