I've used Yellow Birds for over 25 years trolling for salmon on Lake Michigan, walleyes, northern, etc elsewhere. I will give you instructions from a boat moving at trolling speeds. First you let out your lure or bait the desired distance, say 40 feet for example. Then connect the rear clip to your fishing line, connect the front clip to the line going to your rod. Using your thumb or drag let the board plane away from the boat the desired distance, set drag just tight enough to prevent the board from creeping away. When a fish strikes the tattle flag will pop up and you reel in the board, release it and fight the fish to the boat. There are probably you tube video's on how to fish with planer boards.
If you are not using a diving lure, you will likely need to use either an inline or clip on weight to get your bait to the desired depth. This can also be used to get your lure to dive deeper.FishinManiacAdvanced Angler
