Handle wouldn't turn on TH40 out of package
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Cheap
Best Uses: bass and walleye
Comments: I ordered a TH30 and TH40 as part of a Black Friday deal. Although the TH30 has a lot of play in the bail, it works fine. The TH40; however, would not function from day 1. The handle simply won't turn almost as if the bearings are ceased up. After putting some rather expensive line on it, I now have to return it to Zebco.

Can't go wrong!
Pros: Casts perfectly; smooth as silk
Cons: none
Best Uses: trout, walleye, panfish
Comments: Using the Throttle 10 I caught a 22.5 inch trout in a tailwater this past August. The reel performed flawlessly! Unfortunately, I fell a couple weeks ago and my weight landed on the frame braking a part on the bail. I bought the part for 27 cents from Quantum. Although, this reel is not as good as the Smoke 10, which I don't believe Quantum makes any more, it is a fantastic reel. I use it on an 6' 6" ultra lite rod mostly for catching trout. It does the job quite easily. I caught the 10 model on sale at FishUSA for 25.99; that's right I bought it immediately. I enjoy this reel as much as I do the Patriarch or Stradic that I own.

I would go with the TH30 size for bass - largemouth or smallmouth. For other reel manufacturers, you can't go wrong with a 30 or 3000 series reel, they should be very similar, except for gear ratios.

I am looking at the quantum throttle reels I need 2 for smallmouth fishing up to 7 lbs and also a couple for perch or panfish. That may go on ultra light rods. Would the 20 class reels work for both ?

The size 20 would work in ultra light situations however it may have a balancing issue on an ultra light rod. This is only an issue of balance and is a personal choice.

I would say the 30 or the 40 depending on the line weight you are going to use. Each has a max line recommendation in the description and the max drag may be considered also.

The reel only has 14 lbs. of drag and may not be enough on the drag. You would need a bigger reel. I would look into the Shimano for more drag.
