Okuma Mooching reel   (from prior model)
Pros: Drag system
Cons: 1:1 retreive
Best Uses: Catching fish
Comments: Okuma has knocked it out of the park with this reel IMO. I use it for saltwater trolling in both downrigger and keel sinker applications. Combined with a Canadian style mooching rod, this system is a ton of fun. The system is not for the inexperienced angler though. I am a die-hard centerpin angler, thus this combo is a natural fit. The numbered drag settings and easily turned control lever-knob works outstanding or me. If you wanted to use it for downrigger fishing, make sure to grasp the spool firmly before jerking the line from the clip. I have a habit of never doing this, but the shock force of this move would be tough on the reel's inner workings. The 1:1 retreive gets interesting when a fish turns and charges the boat, but that is all part of the fun. The drag control is the most positive asset to me in a trolling application. It is magnitudes better than on a reel with just a drag tension adjustment. Fish On!

Is this mooching reel free spooling like a centerpin reel when letting line out?

Yes the Okuma Raw is like a center pin and also has a lever drag for whichever way you prefer.

I now see that the drag setting goes all the way down to a "free" setting, so maybe it indeed does free spool like a centerpin?
