I love Okuma   (from prior model)
Pros: Smooth action
Best Uses: Catfish
Comments: I just ordered a 10 ft battlecat and a abf 65 avenger my second. I also have a trio 65a and trio abf 65 on battle cats, whisker seeker and ugly stik rods my favorite is the trio abf 65 on 10 ft battlecat the avenger is right behind it but with a much better price point. This is my first order from Fish USA I wish I'd found them sooner they have the best pricing I've seen with a great selection.

Avenger ABF 40B   (from prior model)
Pros: Price
Cons: Not Built for large fish
Comments: I bought 3 of these last fall for carp fishing based on the reviews. Well, as of right now 1 is in for warranty service, 1 will go in for warranty service when I receive the other back, and 1 needs a new handle as the plastic insert inside where the handle attached to the reel broke and the handle will not tighten all the way. At first I was very pleased but maybe these are overmatched playing 20 lb. plus carp. The reel in for warranty had the main shaft bend causing binding in one spot during the retrieve. The one waiting for warranty is recently feeling like the gears are bad as it used to be smooth as silk but now grinds during the retrieve. if you plan to use these for anything bigger than bass, might want to look some more. I can see getting one bad one but 3? Odds pretty high. Might try a size or 2 bigger but I have a bad taste in my mouth with these.

ABF-65B Great value reel (from prior model)
Pros: Price
Cons: weight
Best Uses: Bank fishing, Good all around reel for fresh or salt water
Comments: I picked up the 65 series. I have this spooled up with 25# mono p-line cxx. I've been using it as my surf reel. I'm usually chucking out 3-4oz weights and this reel paired w/ a 12ft ugly stick can cast very far. Very happy w/ the purchase and will add more ABF's to my arsenal depending on species I'm fishing.

Great reel!!!   (from prior model)
Pros: Great price built well mult use reel, Design, Cast great. And love the bait runner., Cast great. And love the bait runner., smooth drag
Cons: Have yet to find one haha maybe the handle of the new version takes some getting used to but that's minor
Comments: I've always been a shimano guy. Tried and true right. Well okuma had decent bait runners for a phenomenal price. Now that they have improved and redesigned some things they are Awsome reels for a phenomenal $$. Too many pros to list. My last AB 40 bait runner has turned me into a okuma guy thru and thru. It's great the reason being no company's nowadays redesign and improve on something w/o increasing the $ dramatically. Not okuma!!

Smooth as silk   (from prior model)
Pros: Castability, Great drag control, Decent bail snap return
Best Uses: Good all around reel for fresh or salt water
Comments: One thing I look for in a reel is a bail that actually closes fairly easily when you initially start to reel. This one does it. For the price, you can't go wrong with this reel. I got it for striper fishing in the Hudson River. The simple bait runner lever works like a charm. The reel drag is smooth and sensitive.

Great reel for the price   (from prior model)
Pros: Design, Well built, Bait feed
Cons: + - indicator on Bait feed
Best Uses: Pier Fishing, Catfishing
Comments: I have the ABF 80 series and It has not disappointed me yet. Its a little big for the piers but when the sharks, Grouper and Reds are hitting its a great reel. The bait feed is a great feature on the spinning reels. When I was younger I had so many spinning reels pulled in or my line blowing everywhere because you have to leave the bail open. So for that reason I switched to ABU Garcia 6000 open faced reels with bait clicks. Now with the bait feed on these spinning reels its a whole new ball game. My open faced Garcia has a great bait click but they just have one setting, On or Off. The ABF series has an adjustable bait feed so if the current or wind is strong you can adjust how easily the line come off the spool. This control is awesome when it comes to fishing with live bait. If you floater fish for Catfish in lakes or chunk out a huge pin fish off the pier in Ft. Myers you control how fast the fish peels off the line before you set the hook. A must for live bait fishing, the only con I had was it does not have a + or - indicator on the reel on witch way to turn the knob. I have to hand it to everyone in Customer Service of FISH USA, they are awesome and I want to say thank you for the quick shipping and service.

Comments: This was my first purchase from FishUSA great customer service. I am really impressed with this reel was not sure how it would hold up but it has landed some 10lb + redfish with no problem. The baitfeeder worked great and it is just as smooth as the shimanos with half the price.

good entry level baitfeeder reel (from prior model)
Pros: Easy Casting, even line spooling
Cons: None detected yet
Best Uses: surf fishing
Comments: I bought this for my first time surf fishing. I only caught some small croaker fish so I didn't really get to test out the baitfeeder function or really put the drag to the test, but these seems to be a pretty good reel for the price point if you are looking for some entry level gear

Great deal for the $$$   (from prior model)
Pros: Price, Design, Seems well built
Cons: Smaller than expected
Best Uses: Carp and Cats
Comments: First off, these reels are considerably smaller than their counterparts. I ordered the 40's, and probably should have gotten the 50's to better balance my set ups. The original avengers were much heavier and bulkier, which is what I expected. These do seem like they will do the trick, but have only landed a few carp over 20lbs. They still haven't gotten a real good test. I don't think you can do much better for the price. I would recommend these to anyone.

Solid reel!   (from prior model)
Pros: Well built, Easy to use
Best Uses: Bank fishing
Comments: Was going to buy the original ABF reel when I saw this new model on fishusa. After seeing the great reviews for the previous version I went and bought this new one. I'm new to baitfeeder reels but not to Okuma products so I was optimistic this would be a good buy. Very easy to use and seems to be pretty well built.

Pros: quiet and smooth, smooth drag
Cons: 1ST SEASON, YET TO FIND ONE, SEEMS GREAT SO FAR

Good reel but the bait feeder drag hangs up. (from prior model)
Comments: I've had 2 of the a40's for a year. I fish almost exclusively for carp, freshwater drum, and suckers. The reel works great except for one of the bait feeder drags doesn't always engage the first time. It almost cost me one of my rods. I just check to see if it is feeding line when I engage the drag. If it hangs up. I just crank the handle once. It usually engages properly the 2nd time. If I had it to do over again. I would go with the A50 or 65. The 40 is good on small waters, but lacks the line capacity I want for distance casting. It's good for about 80 yards, but when a big carp goes screaming off at that distance. It can easily get out another 50 yards pretty quick. Which doesn't leave you much line left if the carp breaks you off at that distance.

buying my 3rd one   (from prior model)
Pros: style, easy casting, smooth drag, smooth reeling, even line spooling, weight, balance
Best Uses: Crappie fishing, walleye fishing, ice fishing, Northern fishing
Comments: This is probably the smoothest reel I've ever used because of the 6 ball bearings. I bought an ultralight 15a for ice fishing and was amazed....so I bought a 20 later for crappie/walleye fishing and now I'm buying a 3rd one the 30 for steelhead. For the price it is 5x better than many reels I tried by Shimano, mitchelll, diawa, etc. I'm sold.

Must for baitfishing   (from prior model)
Pros: Line Doesn't Tangle, Easy Casting, Smooth Drag System, Durable
Cons: Poor Construction, Hard To Maintain
Best Uses: Shore Casting
Comments: I'm an avid carp fisherman so I have to use baitrunners. The ABFs baitrunners are great for carp fishing because I can be rest assured that my rod won't get dragged into the lake when a large carp takes it. You really need the baitrunner option when baiting fishing for large fish for piece of mind. Overall, the reel casts great and the drag is good. However, in about a year or two the bail will not close completely after the cast. Also the maximum line capacity on the spool is inaccurate. I would have given the ABF a higher rating if there were no issues with the bail.

ABF-20a is Perfect for Icefishing   (from prior model)
Pros: Smooth Reeling, Smooth Drag System
Comments: The ABF-20a reel is the smallest and lightest baitfeeder that I was seeking for use with flag activated rod tip ups while icefishing. I plan on using the baitfeeder function to give the right ammount of tension to a shiner to keep it in place but allow the flag to trip and fish to run with the bait in a freespool manner. I am looking forward to reeling in some larger fish through the ice with this set up as well as using it in open water situations Carp fishing.

good price for a good product   (from prior model)
Pros: Reliable, Easy Casting, Durable, Smooth Reeling, Smooth Drag System, Line Doesn't Tangle
Best Uses: Shore Casting
Comments: The reel is light enough to cast with when not bait fishing. I got the lighter weight reel to use 10 to 15 lb test line to cast for Albies, but can be used for blue fish bait fishing as well. The price was reasonable. The extra spool was useful to hold a heavier 20 lb line to switch from casting to bait running.

Pros: Line Doesn't Tangle, Durable, Smooth Drag System, Reliable, Smooth Reeling, Easy Casting
Best Uses: Ocean Fishing, River Fishing, Trolling, Shore Casting
Comments: This reel is very reliable. Only con is the bail - it hangs up every so often. Although not rated for salt water , I only use in salt water. Drag is smooth and reliable. 16 lb rating. I have had drag tightened all the way and larger fish still spooled off reel without burning up drag. I use nothing but bait runners for my salt water fishing

Trying to find part's (from prior model)
Pros: Smooth Drag System, Easy Casting
Cons: Poor Construction
Best Uses: Ocean Fishing, Shore Casting
Comments: I liked this product esp. the fact that it has a bait runner option. But I burned one reel out two summer's ago and then I got a replacement reel with the warranty. Then this past summer the handle and shaft broke as I was reeling a 42 1/2" striper ,luckily I had tired it out and was able to pull it in by hand. Now i'm trying to find part's for it so I can fix and test my luck with it next year or just stick with my Penn and Shimano baitrunner for striper's and bluefish. Maybe if I do fix it I'll use just for fresh water? At least I got my money back on the warranty again .I did like the product I just wish it was more durable.

good reel, good price   (from prior model)
Pros: Smooth Reeling, Reliable, Line Doesn't Tangle, Easy Casting, Smooth Drag System
Cons: Poor Construction
Best Uses: River Fishing, Shore Casting, Jigging
Comments: i bought this reel pretty late in the season last year so i didnt get to really use it but once, then this year i havent really went out so much been real busy but what time i have got use it i love it. i like the fact that if i am useing live bait or fishing on bottom all i have to do is flip the abf switch and sit back and relax. I also like how smooth it casts and reels. the only problem that i have had is this last time i went i was fishing off bottom i had the abf switched on and all the sudden something grabbed ahold and took off i could hear the reel whizzing as the fish was running with my line so i reach down flipped the switch off and set the hookand the fight was on. I fought this fish for about ten minutes and all the sudden the handle broke right off i couldnt believe it the reel is still practically brand new. I love everything else about the reel and i would definetly recomend this reel to anyone, the only downfall to this reel is the handle it just doesnt seem as durable as the rest of the reel.

lie capacity   (from prior model)
Pros: Sensetive baitcaster
Cons: The free spool is abf 80
Best Uses: Trolling, River Fishing, Ocean Fishing
Comments: i bought the abf 90 from here about 2 months ago and was very disgusted that it would only hold half the line it was supposed to. i put 300yds of 100lb braid(20lb mono) onto the abf90 and the spool is over full. i dont no where i am supposed to put the other 290yds u guarenteed it would hold. isn't anybody else having this problem? i held like 5lbs of pressure while lining it up.

Best drift fishing reel I've ever owned   (from prior model)
Pros: "Big fish" smooth, Smooth Drag System, Easy Casting, Durable, Reliable, Smooth Reeling, Line Doesn't Tangle
Cons: No cons
Best Uses: Drift fishing live bait
Comments: I frequently fish a deep, glacial lake on the Massachusetts/Rhode Island line, heavily stocked with trout by both states. I drift fish live bait, i.e.- crawlers and minnows near the bottom for large brown trout. The Okuma Baitfeeder is the most sensitive baitfeeder reel I have ever used and it has enabled me to bring more large browns to the boat. Thank you,Okuma, for superior quality at an afordable price!

Thumbs up on Okuma Baitfeeder   (from prior model)
Pros: Smooth Drag System, Easy Casting, Baitfeeding system, Smooth Reeling
Best Uses: Bait fishing
Comments: Baitfeeder system is simply awesome. IN the past I've always hated to leave the bail open as line will spool off and tangle in the wind. So I've played with fire and tried to figure out how many turns of my spinning reel's drag wheel I need to go from a real light tension, like in the Okuma's baitfeeder drag mode, to normal fish-fighting drag. These will be the staple of my bait fishing arsenal for my guiding on a ME lake.

Good stuff I plan to buy two more! (from prior model)
Pros: Smooth Reeling, Easy Casting, Smooth Drag System, Reliable
Best Uses: Shore Casting
Comments: This reel does all that I ask it to do. I use it with light line for trout. I use it on long ultra light rods while baiting with power bait and floating night crawlers. The drag is smooth. The bait feeder works especially well with floating crawlers using a carolina type rig. Good stuff!

I'm looking to use this reel for pier fishing salmon in the great lakes. 15-25lbs fish and I'm torn between the 40 and 55 models. I'm worried about the size of the 55 that it might be to big, any suggestions?

If you were stream fishing the 55b would be to large, but that size would work well for pier fishing for such large fish.

would the 30b be a good match on a medium light 6 1/2 ft rod? i cast lures for smallmouths and bottom fish for bullheads and the occasional carp up to about 25 lbs.

Either size would fill your needs, but we suggest the ABF-40b due to the line capacity and retrieval speed.
