Kickin' Bass: Getting Wacky with Bass Fishing

Bass Fishing

If you are on the hunt for your next trophy bass and don't think the swimbait will put that football-sized smallmouth in the boat, or finesse worm will catch that slaunch largemouth, definitely stay tuned. While many anglers are getting super technical with enough hard baits to fill three 21 foot boats, other anglers are boating fish left and right with a simple pack of soft plastics, hooks, and a few other items. So what are these anglers doing that is producing so many fish?? Look no further than the wacky rig! Though it has been around for many years, the wacky rig has expanded across the bass fishing world in the last decade and has been changing the game ever since.

So what is a wacky rig? A wacky rig is not a specific bait, but more of a style of rigging various soft plastic baits like stick and finesse worms. The most popular bait for wacky rigging is a 5-inch stick bait. Smaller finesse style baits can also be used as long as their thickness is the right size for the O-Rings. By utilizing a short shanked wide gap hook, anglers are able to insert or fasten the hook right through the middle of the bait. You can see a picture of this on our Popular Bass Rigs Explained article. You may ask: how does one fasten a hook to a soft plastic worm without physically penetrating the worm? In the case of wacky rigging, there are a variety of bands and fasteners which can be used to create the presentation. Where the fasteners excel over simply hooking the bait is in the longevity of the bait. When penetrating the bait with a hook, the soft plastic material is likely to tear when a fish is caught. The rings prevent this and allow for a longer lasting bait that will save you money in the long term.

The great part about fishing wacky rigs is the true simplicity. Simply tie on your hooks, attach the fastener to middle the worm to allow the bait to be hooked, cast out to your favorite shallow to medium water depth spot for bass, and let the worm fall to the bottom. The worm will twitch and flutter as it makes it way to the bottom, and then after it gets close to the bottom, simply follow the cadence, TWITCH -TWITCH- PAUSE until the bait is out of the strike zone. After you have finished your cadence, reel in and cast again! When a fish hits, the line will begin to move or go taught, simply reel down on the fish and pick up the rod tip with a light hookset.

Wacky rigging should be a part of any bass anglers’ arsenal due to its simplicity, and effectiveness. FishUSA has everything you need to start wacky rigging, so you can catch a fish of a lifetime and start making memories today!
