Backreeling

Definition of backreeling

A tactic used by anglers where they turn the handle of a spinning reel backward to let off line to assist the reel's drag system handle large fish with very light line. This also can be helpful when snagged on structure while fishing from a boat. The reel must have a lever or button to turn the anti-reverse feature off and on, as not all spinning reels allow for this tactic.
