At a Glance: Ice Line
Ice lines are fishing lines designed for fishing during the coldest months of the year in the harshest of elements. Ice anglers employ multiple tactics and styles of fishing, sometimes all in the same outing, and they need lines for each tactic to perform as well or better than lines used during warm weather. As ice fishing is completely dependent on weather and climate conditions, ice fishing seasons can be quite short. Having fresh lines for each and every jigging combo, tip-up, and deadstick setup can mean taking advantage of some of the best fishing action all year or total frustration trying to rely on lines better suited for open water. Ice lines needed for the various rods and reels designed for ice fishing are monofilament, copolymer, fluorocarbon line, or braided and super lines. Ice lines need to not break when reeled in against sharp ice as fish are brought up through the holes drilled into the ice. Run and gun tactics produce fish, but ice will build up on exposed line while actively jigging outside of a hut or while hole-hopping as schools move through an area. The abrasion resistance, along with the stealth needed for wary fish with a slower metabolism, often calls for clear lines with no spool-memory and thin diameters. Then there are the predatory fish targeted with a spread of tip-ups. There’s nothing quite like seeing a flag popped up and fluttering in the wind and anglers from other groups yelling, “Flag!”. What is on the other end of that line is anyone’s guess until it’s brought to view at the hole. Tip-up lines are braided lines which are thick, durable, and easily managed by the angler when baiting and hand-lining the biggest, baddest fish in the water. Some lines are covered with a special coating, preventing them from holding water. Tip-up lines need to be limp and easily pulled from the spool yet extremely strong when it’s time to set the hook and begin the fight. FishUSA offers a complete line-up of ice lines for every Ice Belt angler brave enough to walk on frozen water while other anglers are hibernating on their couches.
