At a Glance: Surf Rods

Surf rods are designed for anglers fishing saltwater or brackish waters along coastal beaches and bays from the shore. Surf rods are long in length, up to 15’, to allow the angler to make long casts over the waves and out into the crashing surf. They are strong rods for throwing heavy terminal tackle, and for landing hard-fighting saltwater species such as redfish, snook, stripers and sharks. Surf rods are made to be paired with large spinning reels and conventional reels for the tremendous casting abilities of each style, especially when spooled with braided superlines. Two-piece models are the most popular for their strength and ease of storage, while there are models available in one, three, four, and even five-piece travel surf rods. The butt section of a surf rod is longer than most other fishing rods which allows it to be set in rod holders designed specifically for beachcasting. These long-handled rods will also work with standup fighting belts when battling giant groupers and sharks. Surf rods have fixed reel seats for a secure connection to the reel for both casting baits and lures, as well as fighting hooked fish. Because surf fishing conditions change with location, anglers must be sure to use line and tackle with the correct weight for the species they are targeting.

The most popular brands of surf rods offered at FishUSA include Daiwa, G. Loomis, Lamiglas, Okuma, Penn and St. Croix.
