I'm not a fisherman. I just like to toss the lure here and there. This rod in medium weight, 5'10" one piece with my reel easily handled the three 10# salmon I caught recently. Lightweight upgrade from the generic rod I had before. Casts very nicely, too. or maybe I'm getting better. Thanks FishUSA
Pros: compact size, light weight
Cons: none
Best Uses: freshwater and saltwater, shore fishing, kayak fishing

My wife and I have been using Ugly Stik ultra light rods for years. We keep extras when the family come fishing with us. Two years ago, my wife hooked a large sturgeon and played it for over a half hour. We got a look when it surfaced. She lost the fish because it straightened the hook. While fishing sea trout, I hooked and landed a 50 pound nurse shark. We have caught a lot of cats, walleyes, northern in the 10 pound range. All on 5.5 ft Ugly Stik ultra light rods. So, these rods are tough. But, we like to pan fish and enjoy the action of the light rods. We finally had to replace one- a fish snatched it out of the boat. It was like losing a great friend. One negative-we have one 2-piece rod that comes apart on a cast. Nothing a little super glue won't fix. But when we buy a new rod, it is one piece.
Pros: Reasonable and tough
Cons: none
Best Uses: none

This is a nice 2 piece rod that at 9 feet in length is great for surf fishing. I prefer a one-piece, but at 9', you need 2 pieces to get it into the car and down to the beach. A nice flexible, quality rod that has performed well in it's audition and time will tell if it's the new "go-to" rod for the Pacific Surf. Has done well on the surf perch, the Halibut, Corbina, and Calico bass are on the agenda.

I enjoy using this rod, it is light but can still handle large fish. I like the new look as well and it performs just as well as any other expensive rod, however not as sensitive as they are.
Pros: great guides, new handle, cheap, sensitive tip

Got a 9 feet medium and a 6'6 medium. The 9' one is paired with Okuma Avenger 40 and the 6'6 is paired with Lews speed spinning. The 9' one is for big river and big lakes. It even cast 8oz weight with no problem (the river I am fishing in has really strong current). However, the rod is a little on the soft side. One day, I accidentally hooked three sturgeons while striper fishing. All three escaped during the fight. The whole outfit is outgunned of course, but the main reason is that the rod is too soft for a deep hook set. I then bought a ugly stik tiger specifically for sturgeon. The 6'6 one is my cheap crankbait rod. It is soft and sensitive (among fiberglass rods). I use it mainly for rat-l-trap for LMB. Fish usually hook themselves by loading the rod. Together with the lews speed spinning, it casts a mile. Both the rod and the reel are light. I can cast them the whole day without a problem.

I have used the 9' ugly stick for salmon and steelhead. I have had the rod bent into a complete u wile fighting a big Chinook. It doesn't quite fit in my car between the two doors. I broke the tip off just under the unbreakable part. I had another tip put on it and it still works great.
Pros: Length, flexibility, Affordable price
Cons: Does't fit between my car doors

Just received the New Ugly stiks after so much anticipation, with lots of videos watched on a well known media channel....Worth the wait! Excellent service from Fishusa and the rods are superb.newly designed matte black with one piece guides! This has been a problem with my previous Uglys as I used to experience pop outs regularly. The rods are more sensitive than any previous models .The handles are lovely crafted Eva .One just washes with soap and water once finished fishing.love the red accent on the handles. Well done Shakespeare and well done Fishusa for offering me a wonderful product.

I enjoy the Shakespeare 9' Ugly stick for ocean shore fishing. It is well constructed and handles good fish battles with ease. I had an okuma rod and the guides broke off two of my okuma rods. The Shakespeare is superior in cnstruction and appearance. Good price and FishUSA shipped it to an APO address, whcih is awesome. Thanks Fish USA>

These rods were for salmon fishing in Lake Oahe and fit the bill nicely. They bend evenly and work well for both casting as well as double for downrigger rods. Ugly Stiks are a very universal type rod and take abuse well.

At Fishing Fanatic Charters we use 9' medium action ugly sticks on all of our downriggers. The rods are strong enough to land 35 pound salmon yet flexible enough and forgiving to allow even novice anglers a better chance at landing the big fish. We highly recommend this fishing rod.

Would be a fine salmon rod but purchased as an extra striper rod for the Delaware river and will be used for catfish, carp, and other live bait applications. Nice trolling rod for average sized musky and pike. At this price level not many other rods will last you as long as an Ugly Stik.

I bought this mostly for lure casting in the San Francisco Bay, for schooling stripers, 5 to 15 pounds on average. It is replacing my 35 year old Fenwick. I have to say that the quality and materials today are much superior. I actually paid more in 1970's dollars (for the Fenwick) than I did for this excellent graphite rod. I have caught hundreds of bass, both in California, and in the surf of Martha's Vineyard (on vacation) on the old Fenwick. It is time to retire that rod, and use its replacement.
Pros: Flexible, Sensitive, Accurate Casting, Durable, Good Tip Action

My two new poles were setup with Penn slammers, a 460 & 560 with 20lb. power pro. Casting with side wind gusts just needed some adjusting to hit the target dropoff.Open bail sensitivity was great so we could feel the redfish play with the bait before they took it and ran , that's when the pole goes to work, flip the bail raise the rod tip and let the fish set the hook.If Disney could duplicate the feeling of a boiling redfish on the end of these poles they would have their longest line.

About Me:
Casual Fisher
Flexible and sensitive enough for half pound trout but can take much larger fish like strippers and steelhead as well. Could be considered as a longer general purpose rod. Typical Ugly Stik super construction. Has backbone and VG curve to absorb the energy from larger fish to prevent line wear or breakage, but it's NOT a noodle rod. I've paired it with a Penn 5500Sg and it's a great fit. Could easily sell for much more that they do. Well worth the money...
