spey 10/11
Pros: drag, large arbor, Good Value, weight
Cons: Line will take itself up
Best Uses: steelhead, salmon, spey
Comments: As a novice spey angler, I did NOT want to spend a bunch. The rod, reel and line has already run to $400, but this reel has been the best value. I am an experienced one hander, been fishing for over 40 years, so not a novice.

Good Reel at a Great Price
Pros: practical and tough, simple design, dependable
Cons: open drag system, weight
Best Uses: freshwater, Fly Fishing
Comments: I own quite a few reels from all ranges in quality. This reel may be cheap, but in my opinion, it was designed to be tough and the drag to be dependable. I've bought the 1011 model as a backup spey reel and the drag is definitely smooth and has high drag strength. The drag system is an open system but it’s a simple design and should be cleaned after every outing in freshwater or saltwater because there are four drain holes underneath the drag knob that can allow fine dirt and grit to get in. It is a slightly heavier reel, but it does balance out a spey rod well. There’s also lots of room for backing on the 1011 model. The spool handle is rubberized, good for grip, but I wish it was bigger. Other than the weight and open drag system, it’s a good reel at a great price.

 good value
Pros: practical and tough
Best Uses: Fly Fishing
Comments: This is a decent reel for the price. I have caught close to 50 coho salmon on it so far and it is sufficient, good drag. I fish four to five times a week and am very hard on gear and because I usually fish alone my rod and reel often end up on the ground when landing and releasing large salmon. The drag is sealed up and keeps the sand out and the aluminum spool and body can handle being dropped on rocks and getting yarded through alders and willows when bush wacking. I plan to beat it to death and I bet this will take awhile.

 SLV 7/8
Pros: Good Value, Wonderful drag, Nice finish on reel
Comments: Excellent fly reel! This is the second Okuma I own and the first one is still going strong after 8 years. Cosmetically, it looks great and the drag is awesome. I routinely hook into carp and 30+ inch northern on my lake and the drag has never let me down. I once had to fight a monster carp with my 5 wt for 2 hours with my little 5/6 okuma magnitude and it performed flawlessly. I've dunked it in the water countless times and it just keeps on truckin. At this price point, why bother with anything else?

Good solid reel
Pros: Wonderful drag
Comments: I bought this reel in a 5/6. Started using it this spring. Hooked up a 9lb steelhead that took me into the backing. Man that drag worked flawlessly! A better reel for the money cannot be had. I am going to replace my current 4wt with another one of these. Well done Okuma! Pete - Upstate NY

 Okuma gets the job done
Pros: Reliable, Smooth Drag System Good value
Comments: Took three Okuma fly reels to the Salmon River for our annual fishing trip and all three setups worked perfectly. Was able to set the drag at different levels with ease. This is really important especially if you are netting your own fish and it's a 30 to 35 lb. salmon. Everyone should have at least one of these reals. Great value for the money it cost.

8/9 Wt
Pros: Smooth Reeling, Line Doesn't Tangle, Smooth Drag System
Best Uses: Fly Fishing
Comments: I bought the 8/9wt and paired it with the SLV 8 wt rod. Great balance and overall fairly lightweight. Used it the first weekend in 20 degree weather targeting steelhead and the reel operated flawlessly. Just need to get used to the sensative drag setting. Looking forward to the spring run and next fall on the salmon river.

 good value
Pros: Smooth Reeling, Line Doesn't Tangle, Durable, Smooth Drag System
Best Uses: Fly Fishing
Comments: For the price, this is a nice reel. I would have preferred to buy USA but could not afford the American reels. This Okuma reel is surprisingly light weight for its size. Smooth drag and reeling. I also purchased a spare spool and changing spools is a snap. This reel has a one way drag that can be reversed with some effort.

 Seems good for the money
Best Uses: River Fishing, Fly Fishing
Comments: I bought the to go with a short, 3 wt., St. Croix rod for fishing small, brushy streams in New Mexico. 'Seems a solid piece of equipment - light and smooth. The drag is very sensitive, i.e., it just takes a little turn to change the drag a lot.

Best Uses: Fly Fishing, River Fishing
Comments: Got it to go with a short, light weight fly rod for fishing brush surrounded small streams in New Mexico. Works great. Drag adjustmet is very fine - i.e., a little turn changes the drag a lot.

Not bad
Comments: Took this reel with the matching SLV rod to Pulaski for salmon this autumn. The reel did alright, though I quickly discovered that grit will easily find it's way into the mechanism, cleaning it with river water was a partial cure though I had to be very cautious with the drag until I could clean it properly that night. Haven't had that issue with other reels I own, but this one certainly cost the least of my collection. Time will tell if the drag holds up over the next few years. In all, this reel is worth the money you'll pay. I pulled in more than a few 20-30lb salmon with it. Note: I cut a few meters off the tail end of my main line to accomodate more backing and am glad I did, a few of the salmon stripped me well into my backing. Having the longer reserve made a difference.

Pros: Smooth Reeling, Durable, Reliable, Smooth Drag System, Easy Casting, Line Doesn't Tangle
Best Uses: River Fishing, Fly Fishing
Comments: I bought this reel in a 7/8w about a year ago for steelhead fishing. Works great and does a wonderful job on the long runs that the steelhead love to make. I have caught probably 100 steelies on it, and the drag works as good as new.(unlike some of my other reels). It's becoming a favorites, smooth and reliable.

Best LA fly reel for under $100
Pros: Smooth Drag System, Light Weight, Durable, Reliable, Smooth Reeling
Best Uses: Fly Fishing, Lake Fishing, River Fishing
Comments: Drag & click could be improved but for the $ am not complaining. Performed flawlessly on super hot Manitoba stillwater steelhead/bow cross. Own three of them in two largest sizes. Performed great on large NZ browns. Use for trout in lakes & rivers and smallies on rivers & lake.

Nice Reel
Comments: I've used the SLV for over a year, and have had great success. It's light and durable and at a great value. I have recommended this to friends who have since purchased and also like this reel. I don't see why you'd pay more for a fly reel.

Okuma SLV 89
Pros: Easy Casting, Durable, Smooth Reeling, Line Doesn't Tangle, Smooth Drag System, Reliable
Cons: Line will take itself up
Best Uses: Fly Fishing
Comments: I love the SLV! Big and able to take a hit. I use mine in Salt water for Redfish and in the back yard pond for Bass. AWESOME reel, light and the drag is durable to handle a 30"+ redfish running for the horizion. The only drawback I have found is it will take up line while you cast. As I cast the smooth reelin of the spool causes the spool to move around and take up line on me. I usually keep the line from the reel in my pinkie finger and it doesn't happen, other than that this reel is bulletproof and one of the best reels I have owned. Oh yeah.. all this quality for such a small price... AWESOME...

Really nice flyreel for the money,
Pros: Smooth Reeling, Reliable, Durable, Line Doesn't Tangle, Smooth Drag System, Easy Casting
Best Uses: Fly Fishing
Comments: Very good flyreel !, for a diecast reel. It looks like it is machined, but it is not. ;-) Machined flyreel cost at least 3 times than this one. Material is very tough en very, very light. The drag is super !! Zero startup. Only one thing to remember, becarefull, you can lose the dragknob, if you turn it backwards to much (it is not secured).
