Description

The Okuma Avenger ABF "B" Series Baitfeeder Spinning Reels have undergone numerous upgrades to form and function from its previous models. The most notable is the new Blade Body Design. This body design is compact and streamlined and reduces weight while minimizing its footprint. The baitfeeder system allows anglers to disengage their spinning reel spool and allow their bait to run free. The baitfeeding system incorporates a secondary micro-adjustable drag system at the rear of the reel that allows for precise adjustment of the spool for bait control. These reels have an upgraded machined aluminum spool and new Ergo Grip handle on sizes 40 and larger. The Avenger ABF "B" Series Reels are 5 oz. lighter than previous models.

The Okuma Avenger ABF "B" Series Baitfeeder Spinning Reels now includes Okuma's Precision Elliptical Gearing which delivers unprecedented line lay, increased smoothness, and long life durability. This gear system will enhance the function of the reel for the long term.

Features of the Okuma Avenger ABF "B" Series Baitfeeder Spinning Reels include:

  • On/Off auto trip bait feeding system
  • Multi-disc, Japanese oiled felt drag system
  • 6 BB + 1 RB stainless steel ball bearings
  • 1 Quick Set anti-reverse roller bearing
  • Precision machine cut brass pinion gear
  • Corrosion-resistant graphite body
  • Rigid, diecast aluminum handle design
  • Precision Elliptical Gearing System
  • Machined aluminum, 2 tone anodized spool
  • Corrosion resistant, stainless steel bail wire
  • RESII: Computer balanced Rotor Equalizing System

About Me:
Freshwater Catfish
Saltwater Piers
I have the ABF 80 series and It has not disappointed me yet. Its a little big for the piers but when the sharks, Grouper and Reds are hitting its a great reel. The bait feed is a great feature on the spinning reels. When I was younger I had so many spinning reels pulled in or my line blowing everywhere because you have to leave the bail open. So for that reason I switched to ABU Garcia 6000 open faced reels with bait clicks. Now with the bait feed on these spinning reels its a whole new ball game. My open faced Garcia has a great bait click but they just have one setting, On or Off. The ABF series has an adjustable bait feed so if the current or wind is strong you can adjust how easily the line come off the spool. This control is awesome when it comes to fishing with live bait. If you floater fish for Catfish in lakes or chunk out a huge pin fish off the pier in Ft. Myers you control how fast the fish peels off the line before you set the hook. A must for live bait fishing, the only con I had was it does not have a + or - indicator on the reel on witch way to turn the knob. I have to hand it to everyone in Customer Service of FISH USA, they are awesome and I want to say thank you for the quick shipping and service.
Pros: Design, Well built, Bait feed
Cons: + - indicator on Bait feed
Best Uses: Pier Fishing, Catfishing

I bought this for my first time surf fishing. I only caught some small croaker fish so I didn't really get to test out the baitfeeder function or really put the drag to the test, but these seems to be a pretty good reel for the price point if you are looking for some entry level gear
Pros: Easy Casting, even line spooling
Cons: None detected yet
Best Uses: surf fishing

First off, these reels are considerably smaller than their counterparts. I ordered the 40's, and probably should have gotten the 50's to better balance my set ups. The original avengers were much heavier and bulkier, which is what I expected. These do seem like they will do the trick, but have only landed a few carp over 20lbs. They still haven't gotten a real good test. I don't think you can do much better for the price. I would recommend these to anyone.
Pros: Price, Design, Seems well built
Cons: Smaller than expected
Best Uses: Carp and Cats

Was going to buy the original ABF reel when I saw this new model on fishusa. After seeing the great reviews for the previous version I went and bought this new one. I'm new to baitfeeder reels but not to Okuma products so I was optimistic this would be a good buy. Very easy to use and seems to be pretty well built.

I've had 2 of the a40's for a year. I fish almost exclusively for carp, freshwater drum, and suckers. The reel works great except for one of the bait feeder drags doesn't always engage the first time. It almost cost me one of my rods. I just check to see if it is feeding line when I engage the drag. If it hangs up. I just crank the handle once. It usually engages properly the 2nd time. If I had it to do over again. I would go with the A50 or 65. The 40 is good on small waters, but lacks the line capacity I want for distance casting. It's good for about 80 yards, but when a big carp goes screaming off at that distance. It can easily get out another 50 yards pretty quick. Which doesn't leave you much line left if the carp breaks you off at that distance.

This is probably the smoothest reel I've ever used because of the 6 ball bearings. I bought an ultralight 15a for ice fishing and was amazed....so I bought a 20 later for crappie/walleye fishing and now I'm buying a 3rd one the 30 for steelhead. For the price it is 5x better than many reels I tried by Shimano, mitchelll, diawa, etc. I'm sold.
Pros: style, easy casting, smooth drag, smooth reeling, even line spooling, weight, balance
Cons: none
Best Uses: Crappie fishing, walleye fishing, ice fishing, Northern fishing

I'm an avid carp fisherman so I have to use baitrunners. The ABFs baitrunners are great for carp fishing because I can be rest assured that my rod won't get dragged into the lake when a large carp takes it. You really need the baitrunner option when baiting fishing for large fish for piece of mind. Overall, the reel casts great and the drag is good. However, in about a year or two the bail will not close completely after the cast. Also the maximum line capacity on the spool is inaccurate. I would have given the ABF a higher rating if there were no issues with the bail.
Pros: Line Doesn't Tangle, Easy Casting, Smooth Drag System, Durable
Cons: Poor Construction, Hard To Maintain
Best Uses: Shore Casting

About Me:
Avid Fisher
The ABF-20a reel is the smallest and lightest baitfeeder that I was seeking for use with flag activated rod tip ups while icefishing. I plan on using the baitfeeder function to give the right ammount of tension to a shiner to keep it in place but allow the flag to trip and fish to run with the bait in a freespool manner. I am looking forward to reeling in some larger fish through the ice with this set up as well as using it in open water situations Carp fishing.

The reel is light enough to cast with when not bait fishing. I got the lighter weight reel to use 10 to 15 lb test line to cast for Albies, but can be used for blue fish bait fishing as well. The price was reasonable. The extra spool was useful to hold a heavier 20 lb line to switch from casting to bait running.

This reel is very reliable. Only con is the bail - it hangs up every so often. Although not rated for salt water , I only use in salt water. Drag is smooth and reliable. 16 lb rating. I have had drag tightened all the way and larger fish still spooled off reel without burning up drag. I use nothing but bait runners for my salt water fishing

I liked this product esp. the fact that it has a bait runner option. But I burned one reel out two summer's ago and then I got a replacement reel with the warranty. Then this past summer the handle and shaft broke as I was reeling a 42 1/2" striper ,luckily I had tired it out and was able to pull it in by hand. Now i'm trying to find part's for it so I can fix and test my luck with it next year or just stick with my Penn and Shimano baitrunner for striper's and bluefish. Maybe if I do fix it I'll use just for fresh water? At least I got my money back on the warranty again .I did like the product I just wish it was more durable.

i bought this reel pretty late in the season last year so i didnt get to really use it but once, then this year i havent really went out so much been real busy but what time i have got use it i love it. i like the fact that if i am useing live bait or fishing on bottom all i have to do is flip the abf switch and sit back and relax. I also like how smooth it casts and reels. the only problem that i have had is this last time i went i was fishing off bottom i had the abf switched on and all the sudden something grabbed ahold and took off i could hear the reel whizzing as the fish was running with my line so i reach down flipped the switch off and set the hookand the fight was on. I fought this fish for about ten minutes and all the sudden the handle broke right off i couldnt believe it the reel is still practically brand new. I love everything else about the reel and i would definetly recomend this reel to anyone, the only downfall to this reel is the handle it just doesnt seem as durable as the rest of the reel.

Baitfeeder system is simply awesome. IN the past I've always hated to leave the bail open as line will spool off and tangle in the wind. So I've played with fire and tried to figure out how many turns of my spinning reel's drag wheel I need to go from a real light tension, like in the Okuma's baitfeeder drag mode, to normal fish-fighting drag. These will be the staple of my bait fishing arsenal for my guiding on a ME lake.
