 Down East rod holder
Pros: durable, pull the rod up and back to you when a fish don't have to push the rod out of the holder when a fish strikes
Comments: I purchased this rod holder because a friend of mine has them on his houseboat and they work really well. I just installed a model D-11 inboard bracket mount on the houseboat I fish from. I like the all metal construction and the fact they are made in the USA. The only improvement I could see was if there was a slot in the bottom of the rod holder where the trigger of a bait casting rod could go in. I put my rods where the reel is between where the rod holder closes.....this assures the rod can't be pulled out of the holder when a fish strikes. Since bait casting rods have a trigger....I am forced to put the reel behind where the rod holder would be nice to have a slot in the rod holder where the trigger could go through when the rod holder is closed. Other than that...I can't see any other suggestions to improve this rod holder.

 Down-East Rod Holder
Pros: "Well made, " "great company technical support, " "very innovative quick rod release feature".
Comments: I've had two other Down-East Rod Holders, and they are definitely excellent products made here in America. The ability to quickly pull up and off your rod from the holder is wonderful innovation. The product is made of cast metal parts, and there is absolutely no non- durable parts parts associated with the holder. It seems that has the best price for this outstanding product. A major competitor sells the same product for about $10 more. It's solid and somewhat heavy, and a true innovative American product.
15 years and going strong
Pros: Durable, Functional, Quick, Awsome
Comments: My boat came with two of these and that was more than 15 years ago. I'm sure glad I fould then again. They grip your pole like your hand does when it's face up. Push it down and the fingers close on it. Pull up on the rod and the fingers open. There is never a fear that your rod will go over board.. I wish they had a photo of the thing open ready to put the rod in. The wing nut you see merely sets the angle your rod is held at relative to the water. You set it once and never touch it again. It has nothing to do with securing the rod to the holder. Just lift up on the top and it opens like a clam shell. Push it back into the base and the base causes it to close and hold your rod secure. Simply the best design I've ever seen. Oh almost forgot, you can set BOTH the vertical and horizontal position of the pole relative to the boat. So say your trolling, the you can set it so your rod is 45 degrees up (vertical) and 30 degrees pointed to the back of the boat (horrizontal). The 45 degree ange is set by the wing nut you see and the 30 degree ange is set by the positon you lower the clam shell back into the base.

 robust, good stuff
Pros: Easy To Maintain, Durable, Functional
Best Uses: Fresh Water
Comments: I needed a solid, wide opening holder to use with my fishing boat and this is exactly what would fit there. Greatly appreciated the simple and efficient design, very good looking.
Pros: Easy To Use, Functional, Durable, Easy To Maintain
Best Uses: Fresh Water
Comments: I've used Down-East rod holders for over 20 years for Salmon to perch. The version Fish-USA has is excellent for those square rails used on pontoons. Just check the clamp on occasion especially after you've made a run to another spot as the vibrations from the boat may loosen the screw clamp. The rod holder won't slip with a hit no matter how large the fish or how heavy the strike.

Great Rod Holder
Pros: Easy To Use, Easy To Clean, Quality Construction
Best Uses: Small Boats
Comments: This holder is the easiest to use when a fish strikes. One motion does it. You do not have to pull forward and up to set the hook, just remove the rod and set in hook in one easy movement. Down-East Rod Holders tout themselves as "The Last Rod Holder You Will Own" and it's true.
