Great vise for the price
Pros: Easy To Use, Construction, Cost, Functional
Best Uses: Traveling
Comments: For the price I don't think you can beat this vise. There are certainly fancier and more expensive vises available, but this one does the job well. The rotation is smooth; it seems to hold its adjustments well without a lot of fidgeting. It's well-built and compact and holds a variety of hook sizes very well. So far I'm not bothered by the plastic ends on the adjustment screws, but if they break off that will be a pain. The pedestal base is a little smaller than I'd like, but that's a trade-off, as it makes it easier to carry with you. It does come with both pedestal and clamp, but the stem is really too short to make the clamp all that useful, and there's no option to extend the stem. If you keep the screw that adjusts the rotary tension loose, the vise head will move up and down a bit. Tighten the screw down, and it won't move at all. It doesn't come with a bobbin cradle, but i never use one anyway. These are, in my opinion, very minor issues. I bought it as a spare/backup/travel vise, and it is perfect in those respects, especially given the price. If this were the only vise i had to tie on, I'd still be satisfied.

 Solid bullet proof vise.
Pros: Easy To Use, Functional, Durable, Easy To Maintain
Best Uses: Traveling, Fresh Water
Comments: I am a beginner so keep that in mind when reading my review; however, I also own the Peak Rotary vise which is about 50% more expensive than the Apex. I will compare the two in some parts of this review.Overall, this is a solid vise that really holds the hook without slippage. I've had size 2 streamer to size 14 nymph hooks in it no problem. I don't see why it couldn't go bigger or smaller, I've just not tested it. The adjustment screw and locking lever that controls the jaws have a "rough feeling" to them. It works; however, and may smooth over time but the Peak controls are more refined. In the end it gets the job done and is made of heavy machined stainless steel parts so I don't think the longevity is impacted in any way. The entire vise is made of machined and cast steel parts except for the two black knobs which are plastic with steel threads. The jaws are hardened tool steel. It gives the feeling that this thing is designed and made to last a life time and then some. The Apex comes with a pedestal base and a clamp base which is a real bonus given the price (The Peak you have to buy one version and order/buy the other option seperately). One additional feature I like about the the Apex over the Peak is the small footprint which makes it a more portable tool and takes up less space on your desk (but it is heaavvvy because of all the steel parts - this might be a plus or minus depending on your point of view).Disadvantages: The main disadvantage of this vise is with the rotary function. There is quite a bit of play when using the rotary function. The control knob is used either to lock the rotary or allow it to spin. While spinning the vise, it tends to spin the locking knob as well. You can't tension the amount of resistance on the spin like the Peak because this is a steel on steel mechanism vs plastic on steel with the Peak. Having said that, in actual use, it isn't that noticable since this isn't an offset vise like the Peak. The secondary disadvantage of this vise is the bobbin cradle must be purchased seperately. You really need it to take advantage of the rotary function so it should be included but is not. I picked up the Anvil bobbin cradle because it is made of beautiful brass and steel vs the ugly black plastic and steel with the Peak. In use I don't like it as much as the Peak. Every time I want to use it or push it out of the way I have to play around with the beautiful locking knob which is a hassle (Metal on metal lock again) because it moves up and down and all around in the process. The Peak has a plastic friction fit that allows you to easily move it around by just pushing it in or out of the way and doesn't move vertically unless you move it that way. I guess beautiful brass parts arn't advantageous in every situation. The Apex also ships with a material clip. It is supposed to hold your fly tying materials as you tie your fly. [...] This vise is advertised with a lifetime warranty which just adds to my confidence around the product. [*]Overall, I would rate this a solid 4 or 4.5 out of 5, especially given the price. If they could fix the rotary function and add a Peak type bobbin cradle for the same price, I'd rate this a 6.

A great vise to have
Pros: Durable, Functional, Easy To Use, Easy To Maintain
Best Uses: Fresh Water, Salt Water, Traveling
Comments: For the price you simply cannot buy a better vise. I use several vises and this is my favorite for small patterns. Easy to use and adjust with sure hold jaws that don't slip, a good heavy base and comfortable angle.
