Report: Water conditions remained good today, a bit clearer but still tinted. The fish didn't seem to be responding as well as Sat and Sun, I think due to high fishing pressure. We continued to catch fish on sucker spawns, hopefully well get another good run of fresh fish before the season ends. The fall run may have spoiled us!

Report: Well, had a decent day on Saturday. Fished with both the fly and noodle rod. Caught and released 8. Had another 4 on and countless missed takes. Where? Not important other than the fact that absolutely no one was around. Geez it feels good to have some elbow room. Keep fishing arm to arm at Walnut and Elk.

Report: Fished Elk all day and hooked up on a bunch. I would say the flow was good and water was stained a bit too much for my liking but really started to clear up towards evening. It only showered a little and didn't affect the stream at all. I noticed a lot of spawning activity and fish running everywhere.
Good luck everyone!

Location: Elk, Walnut, Racoon
Date Fished: 2-26
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Started at 7:30 on Elk and it was still a little to high for my liking, managed to foul hook one dark fish and saw one caught. Next we went to check out crooked and it was like choclate milk. Went to Racoon and it wasn't much better so we gave it a whirl and no steelies just a few smolt. We decided to go to Walnut and this proved to be both smart and stupid with there being a million and one other peoples idea,I guess. I caught 6 and lost atleast another 6. Nothing real big but nice fish. We then left and went back to Elk and found conditions a little better. We could see fish moving and managed to catch 2 and lose 3 more before calling it quits. Feels good to be back out on the stream. Good Luck.

Report: The fishing on Sat was excellent in Elk Creek. The water was high and green but many fish could still be spotted. A few of the fish we caught were beat up, but most were in good shape. Sucker spawns and black wooley's seemed to do the trick.

Type of Report: Stream
Report: I fished the creek from the marina to the Manchester from midnite till 3:00am saw a few fish but couldn't get them to hit. So went back to the marina and fish on the corner where the water was free of ice . Saw a few fish swimming round but only had afew small hits. Went back up the creek bout 7:30am and started finding the fish alittle more hungry.
I found a honey hole under the Manchester bridge that had 7 or 8 fish in it. I managed to land 3 and lost 1 before i had company fishin the hole with me. Of the 3 that I landed I only keep 1 cause the other 2 had rot spots on them. I sure would like to know what causes that on them. the 1 that I kept was 29inch male, he is for the dinner table.
There were alot of people out enjoying the nice weather, it's ashame it won't say this way. I caught all my fish on single eggs or sacks.
Good luck and Good Fishin.

Location: Walnut
Date Fished: Fri &Sat 25-26 Feb
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Great Friday afternoon on Walnut as the water lowered by a foot and a half between 3 and dusk- 30 X 2 for Bob E.and I. Fish were both old and fresh with a huge run from the night before filling most areas. The best part was there was room to fish and work a drift just about anywhere on the stream. NOT SO on Saturday! May have been the most feet in the water I've seen on Walnut ever. Fish were moving and hitting with a lot of "coming down" heard all morning. Must say the courtesy was pretty good all morning ---except for the 20-something drunk who proved that there will always be an idiot around somewhere - even on a steelhead stream. Shock of the day was to see more than a few SUCKERS being caught! Too early by a few weeks for those guys. Hope that doesn't mean an early end to a great Steelhead year!

Good fishing--------!

Report: On Wednsday I went to Walnut Creek to see how high the water was and how fast the current was going it was a mud hole where I was but I gave it a try any how to see if anything was in the water. Boy did I get a surprise the first cast I threw in I landed a 14 1/2 steelhead after that the day went dead with no fish in sight.Thursday morning I got up around 9:00a.m and headed to the same spot I was in on wedsday. The morning drug on till about 11:00a.m when I noticed fish trying to get on the other side of the creek so I tied on a pink cotton ball flavored in anise a black licorece scent the first cast boy the fish where going crazy over this stuff it was amazing how the fish were attacking the bait. Take this advise and you will have the most increadable fishing experience of your life.

I have not been back out since Monday as I suspect the ice is getting rotten. If the ice goes the CRAPPIES are next!

Report: Took a ride to see how the creeks looked on wen. morn. Walnut was jammed up solid from the mouth to the parking lot entrance, from there up stream it was high, fast & muddy. There where 4 guys fishing between the bridge and Manchester hole.Don't know how they did.The marina was still frozen and the water was up to the top of the walls, 3 guys where fishing there in little holes. Went to Elk, it was also ice jammed from the mouth to up past the parking lot, a hole was open down at the mouth, saw 2 guys fishing there. On the way home i got off 79 at Mckean to take a look, it also was running high and fast, didn't see anyone there. So by the lookes of everything, it's gona be like that for a few more days till the mouths open up and let the streams into the lake.

Type of Report: Stream
Report: Walnut had alot of fish being caught between the small boat launch and Manchester Hole. Most successful anglers that I talked to were using egg sacks & wooly buggers but alternated as the fish would go off & on to different baits/presentations. The ice seemed to have scoured out some of the loose fill in the holes though it may just be because of higher water flows.

Type of Report: Bay
Report: We started at about 8:30 and fished untill about4:30. Morning conditions were bright and windy, fishing was slow with only about 10 keeper gills and a few smelt. When the clouds rolled in for the afternoon the fishing picked up only slightly. We ended up with about 30-35 keeper gills and about 40 smelt. The sun and warm temps took a toll on the snow which was still on top of the ice leaving 2"-3" puddles in some areas although the ice depth remains between 11"-13" depending on the areas we had moved to. Let's hope better days are ahead like I keep hearing. Even though fishing was slow, it was still a GREAT DAY OFF!!!!!

Report: I was wondering if someone could help. In the fall, while fishing Manchester, the last time I was up, I had caught about 50 fish..unfortunatly I had a line problem and only landed one. I use a 10'6" St. Croix noodle rod and 4# trilene for line..obviously the line wasnt strong enough. What kind of line can I use that isnt too obnoxious..someone had suggested 8# something or rather, but I cant remember. I would like to get something on the reels that I will be able to use year round that is reliable. Thanks for the info in advanced. Tight lines all...and be safe if your crazy enough to play on the ice..

Location: Elk Creek
Date Fished: Friday, Feb. 17, 2000
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Randy Gifford and I fished the Elk in the Sterritania area all day Friday. There are fish that far up! We each hooked about a dozen. They took Squirl Butts, Price Nymphs, spawn sacks, and Stucker Spawn.

The bigger fish (6-8 pounds) were all colored up and some had nicks on ther foreheads from ice hits, while the smaller fish (2-3 pounds) were fresh and chrome colored.

It was COLD, but it was worth it. Just cast in between the ice blobs and make sure to get your presentation to the bottom. That's where the fish are, on the bottom. Mostly in pools and deep runs. Only saw a few in the riffles.

I used Stanley's Ice-Off Paste on my rod guides and it kept them ice-free. My fishing buddy didn't use it and his iced up all the time. We have identical rods, lines, and setups. So the darn stuff does work!!!! The problem is finding it. The only shop that I know that has it is TMF Sport Shop in Ravenna, OH. It is a Loon product, so it's not that hard to get. Just that most shops don't carry it!!!

Oh yea, if any one finds a two-way radio (black Radio-Shack) its mine. Lost the dang thing up by the water falls I think!

Report: Spent about two hours in Walnut this AM and saw no fish in any location from inlet to falls other than in the midle area of the Manchester Hole. About 10-12 anglers there with a couple guys catching a few from a small area at the lip of the farside ic earea. Single maggot or small sucker spawn were the baits.

Don't expect much improvement until a real thaw and opening of the mouth of the stream at the lakefront to clear the ice. Til then--the ice guys will have their day.

Date Fished: Feb. 3
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Presque Isle Bay....... Patrols have found a large number of perch being caught off of the SONS Hatchery but most are under 8" in length. Ice fishing survey teams indicate that only 20% of the fish caught are in excess of 8".

Although Bluegills & Crappie are being caught, there have been no reports of "exceptional" fishing so far. Fishing pressure during the week has been ight with bigger crowds on the weekends.

Edinboro is giving up some perch with successful anglers starting early in the day and working hard for them.

A few steelhead are being taken at Walnut Creek. The only open water is a thin strip under the Manchester Bridge. The Walnut Boat Basin is open to ice fishermen. The wooden signs prohibiting fishing in the basin are intended for the time period when boats are moored there. Remember that the water depth is only about 3' so fish accordingly.
