Fishing Reports Archive

April 2000

Location: North East Marina
Date Fished: 4-15-2000
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Similar to last year, Lake Erie has reverted back to old tricks. Two weeks ago, water temperatures began to rise. After days of constant north and northeast winds, the nearshore water temperature is at 47 degrees and offshore the water temperature is 45 degrees.

By the weekend, bass anglers should have success at Hammermill or by working the shoreline east to Shade`s Beach. Best tactic for the current cold water is a slow presentation with jigs tipped with minnows. Start at 15 feet and continue to 30 feet.

With the current water temperature, finding the steelhead and lake trout may be tough. I found huge schools of baitfish near North East Marina and offshore. If weather conditions allow, start trolling in 70 feet and keep trolling patterns north to south. Locate the baitfish and keep spoons or plugs around 35 feet.

Location: Presque Isle just southeast of the channel between green and red buoys in 28 ft. of water
Date Fished: 4-26-00
Type of Report: Bay
Report: Fished the bay this morning, from around 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get them to hit. Threw everything but the kitchen sink at them. Saw about 4 other boats in the same area, but didn't see anyone landing anything. Tried to get out on the lake but too much wind and large waves stopped us. Does anyone know if the smallies are up at northeast yet? Have fun, but remember, BE SAFE!!!!! J.J.

Location: Gravel Pits
Date Fished:
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Saw the picture of the carp that was caught at the gravel pits. I remember taking the kids there to feed these fish. They used to come right up to the shore and the kids would throw them bread. For the past few years these fish became an icon of the gravel pits.
I'm not going to tell the kids they were fattening them up for the anglers.

Report: Great place for kids! Live minnows equals SLAMMIN EM.Thanks to Warren and Ray our adopted grandpas. These guys were the epitomy of what its all about. Before we knew it our six year old girl was bringing in a 12 in. brown on their 12 ft. noodle rod.The fish and rod proved too heavy and she needed help. "Grandpa" was right there and you should have seen her face! Not too bad for a"Drearie Erie" day.Four kids took 10 fish , put three back, and lost???? Who knows. Here's to more guys like this!!!!

Report: Thanks to all involved in this years stocking. This is a great location to take your kids.Started out with worms and meal worms, four kids, one "cold" wife and little patience. The kids showed up the wife landing several nice browns and refreshingly many brooks. The best part of the whole day??? Warren and Ray,our adopted grandpas. These guys came in and were just slamming them. Obviously the kids curiousity got the better of them."Watcha usin Mister?"These men were the epitomy of what its all about. Instead of getting upset with their enthusiasm they genuinely encouraged it. Before we knew it our six year old little girl had a 12 ft. noodle rod in her hand bringing in what turned out to be a 12 inch brown.Between the rod and the fish she couldn't even pick it up on the bank."Grandpa" stepped in and helped to be gratified by her squeels of delight. Not too bad for a gloomy drizzly "dreerie Eeerie" day.

Location: North pier of the bay
Date Fished: April 22, 2000
Type of Report: Bay
Report: I started fishing for steelhead just before 9 in the morning. The steelhead seem to be moving out of the bay. I figured there still might be a group of fish leaving the bay through the area of north pier. On my third third cast I hooked into a nice steelhead using jig and maggots under a bobber. The jig
was set between 10 and 12 feet under the bobber. From 9 until 2 in the afternoon I hooked 2 other steelhead and missed two other bobbers that went under. I figure the steelhead season can be extended at least another week fishing the north pier area. Good luck to anyone trying this area.

Location: North East Marina
Date Fished: 4-15-2000
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Warm sunshine and calm waters greeted Lake Erie anglers this weekend. Near shore water temperatures are at the magical mark of 50 degrees. However, two miles off shore, water temperatures are still in the 40 to 44 degree range. Bass action has started off Shade's Beach and in front of Hammermill. Best Tatic is a jig tipped with a minnow and slow presentation. Cold off shore water temperatures are keeping the steelhead and lake trout scattered. I talked to a few boats that were running downrigger gear and all reported scattered releases. Weather permitting, smallmouth bass fishing will be in full swing by April 22. Anybody hoping to try the nighttime walleye fishing should be able to make plans for the beginning of May.

Location: Elk Creek south of Route 5
Date Fished: 4/13/00
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Report for Allan (and anyone else that's intrested). There was just enough color to the water to make the steelhead comfortable in the deep holes. Caught 3 to 4 per hour all day long. Might have caught more but every other fish was a BIG sucker. Was drifting bait along the bottom with spinning gear (float and 1 large split shot). Used mostly quarter sized chunks of skein and nightcrawlers to keep the smolts from swallowing the bait. Steelhead (18 to 28")would take single eggs but so would smolts. Water was cold in morning and fish were sluggish but fishing improved as day went on. Started with 4# test but line was worn out by noon so switched to 8# with 6# flourocarbon leader. Brokeoff a couple times and switched to straight 8# test with about 1/2 the strikes per hour as 4#. You might need 4# because water was clearing fast. I met one old fly fisher who said he got 7 at American Legion with olive wooly buggers. So steelhead still there and hungry but not for long.

Report: Well the recent rains didn't bring in the fish as expected. Started at 20 mile and caught 1, major problem with suckers (about 20 caught). Only saw 1 other caught and decided to move to 16- mile. Same story there, saw 2 steelheads but none caught. Went to elk just upstream of follies to some areas that i always cought fish this year and suprised to see no action or fish in the holes. I think the fish went the wrong way!!!! Maybe this weekends rain will bring in back. heres hoping for a spring run.

Report: Heavy rains on the weekend didnt bring in many fish as most of us were hoping for that last run. Started early on 16-Mile only a few stragglers in the stream, about the same on Raccoon only single small fish. Went to the upper Elk above Folly's End and didn't even see a fish. Ended day at Walnut basin. I saw less than dozen fish from mouth up to falls above Manchester. Was able to land four two big monsters one at the falls above Manchester and the other in chutes area. Only saw two others caught. What a way to end the season though. See you next year.

As many reports are being posted the great spring run of 2000 is near end. The fish I have spotted in the creeks have either been diplaying their battle scars or have developed "LOCK-JAW" and being very wary in their feeding habits......

Report: Tried fishing the bay a little today for some early pike. After trying without success for an hour moved across from the monument towards town. We found some deep water and where marking quite a few fish so we began to troll shad raps. We began to pick up steelhead in the 20-22 inch range. I switched to a spoon after noticing seagulls diving for injured baitfish and was able to pick up a few nice ones. Let all of them go except for two that inhaled the spoon into their gills and were badly bleeding. After getting home and cleaning the fish I found 5-6, three inch shad in their stomachs. I never realized that their were this many steelies in the bay. We usually don't get that much action out of walnut in the fall. If anyone knows any more about the steelies in the bay please e-mail me.............J
