Finding a special place near Lake Erie

When a child grows and becomes an adult, life becomes complicated, with new images overtaking the old, some good and some bad, still somewhere, an image remains. It is a time of no worries, only happiness, and most often with family. It is a time missed, but not forgotten.

Picnic Bench

For Brenda, it was a summer cabin along the shore of Lake Erie, and it was 32 years ago.

"I grew up going to a summer cabin on Lake Erie, near Buttermilk Falls." Brenda said. "This property was across the road from a beautiful farm, and was privately held by my ancestors. I am no longer living back east. I now live in Colorado, but I miss it there."

I found your column by doing a search of Lake Erie, Brenda added, and her question is:

Capt. Dave -

Can you pinpoint the area for me and tell me what has become of it at all? I wish I had more information, but I was 8 years old the last time I went and have no family left to ask. Any help at all is appreciated. We had one year-round neighbor there, and a family named Rudisell had property there as well.

The cabin was on the top of a cliff, and we could walk right down to Lake Erie. It was in New York, and I remember as a child we could get to buttermilk falls by inner tube! I am 40, so that was 32 years ago. (time flies!) I also remembered the last name of the folks who owned the farm across the road: The Dikeman(n)'s.

I was looking at the map. I saw a place called Dobbins Landing, and that sure sounds familiar. From what I can see on the map, it is craggy and has inlets like where I remember playing! Could it be there is a "Little Buttermilk Falls" around there? It is about the right distance (I think) from Westfield. I hope this is a point in the right direction.

Also, when I was there as a child, I had an accident (was bitten badly by a dog!) and I went to the hospital in Westfield, NY which was about a 30-minute drive, or (maybe 45) I can't remember now. So I could be wrong about Buttermilk Falls. Maybe it is the New York Buttermilk Falls?

Hope this helps,

Brenda

Captain Dave's Response:

Hello Brenda,

With skill and from memory, an artist captures a timeless moment. When you view it, time stops. You are taken to a special place and time. When we are young, our memory does the same: it captures a special time and forever holds it. Sometimes, though, it needs a little help to revive that image.

Beach Boat

Is there another Buttermilk Falls? If anyone has information such as where this place might be, a family who was there during that time, recognize any of the names mentioned by Brenda, or pictures, please email me at fisherie@verizon.net and I will forward it to Brenda.

Good Fishing,

Capt. Dave Adams
