Awesome blank, nice grip, poor guides
By HorndogVerified Reviewer from Columbus, OH on 9/22/2010
Pros:
Accurate Casting, Good Tip Action, Sensitive
Cons:
Poor Construction
Describe Yourself:
Avid Fisher
Was this a gift?:

Comments about Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Shakespeare Agility IM-8 Spinning Rods:

While I still think this rod is a good value because the blank and grip are excellent for the price, it is not constructed with even decent guides. The guides have metal(lic) inserts that are not very smooth; my tiptop's insert was actually quite abrasive. Luckily, it fell out and the stainless steel underneath is an improvement. I have purchased an alternative tiptop w/ a ceramic insert to solve the issue.

Comments about Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Shakespeare Agility IM-8 Spinning Rods:

Was out fishing today for gills and rod snapped in half. I was jigging beside the boat and i know it sometimes can be stressful on the rod when your jigging, but dont feel it should snap in two pieces on a average sizi gill. I have the 7FT. UL also and no problems so far. Have the ugly stick and they are a really nice pole but would not buy the agility again.

The 7'0 medium is a nice rod that is light and sensitive enough for smallmouth but sturdy enough for largemouth fishing in cover. As a spinning rod user 95 percent of the time these rods have taken a beating the last few seasons and have pulled in some large fish. Very nice tip and feel.

Comments about Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Shakespeare Agility IM-8 Spinning Rods:

While this rod has a few problems...it does not want to stay as one peice...the butt is a little too long for my liking but that is easily corrected. You have to make sure the rod is firmly pushed together or it will come apart as you cast. I would saw off about 3 inches of the butt and find a cap for it and it would be excellent for my fishing purposes....Crappie...Trout...White Bass. The sensitivity is great. The action allows for a good hook set. Some have talked about how this rod breaks easily but I have put this rod through the wringer and I don't see that as an issue. In my opinion this rod is a bargain for the price you pay.

Comments about Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Shakespeare Agility IM-8 Spinning Rods:

The IM-8 rods have a very slim profile, so much that looking at them, you wouldn't think they could be strong, but they load and cast like with an unexpected power. Their sensitivity transmitted from the lure to the reel has to be felt to really appreciate. And the proportioned balance is smoothly distributed over the entire length of the rod from strike to fight— YOU always feel in total control, not just hanging on for dear life. Just close your eyes on casts, retrieve, and fight, and you'll see what I mean. You just won't believe what you'll experience. The IM-8 rods are that unbelievable.

Comments about Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Shakespeare Agility IM-8 Spinning Rods:

Since my last Agility IM-8 review, I took advantage of a FishUSA weekly sale and picked up the two piece 5' ultra light rod. Perfect with a small Pflueger ultra light Trion or President reel. Broken down, the whole package is very light and 2 1/2' so I always have it in the car with me. I keep a couple of 1/16 Rooster Tails and 1/12 Kastmasters in the glove box so I'm ready to play whenever the opportunity presents itself.

In the short time I've had the rod I've only fished for small bass and gills with it but it doesn't take a monster to put a good bend in it. You can't go wrong for the money.

Best Uses:
Large Rainbows
Describe Yourself:
Avid Fisher
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Shakespeare Agility IM-8 Spinning Rods:

In using down riggers for big trout and browns, we use just bare lures so ultra light is the way we fish, so having a long rod, that is limber enough to put a big bend in to help take up the slack when a fish hits, but with enough backbone to still set the hook, this rod works perfectly. It has more guides then the normal rod and the cost makes it a great deal for the quality! I have bought two and bought one for my buddy so he will quit using mine!!!

Comments about Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Shakespeare Agility IM-8 Spinning Rods:

I wade rocky midwest streams in search of bronzebacks. The 7' two piece medium action Agility fits the bill perfectly for my uses. Stiff enough for bottom bouncing jigs in current but sensitive enough to detect subtle mouthing.

These rods are a great bang for the buck. My two 7-footers have NINE line guides (counting the tip) made of stainless steel and titanium. I challenge you to walk through any big box store and count the guides on any similar priced rods. The cork handles are comfortable and apparently durable, as mine have not chipped at all. These rods are light enough to carry for hours. My spinning outfit is very well balanced. And it's IM-8 graphite. It's a nice piece for the money.

I really like these rods. They are an excellent value. I have much more expensive rods and these compare to rods of more than twice the price. The 7' ultra lite is awesome except for the handle being about 3" too long. I cut off the 3" and put a new butt cap on and it works great.

I bought my first Ugkly Stik in 1980, while on leave from the Military, to go fishing with my Dad. I have used this one rod until my two boys were big enough to start "borrowing" it. I bought them and myself some cheaper rods and started getting a collection of broken rod. So when I went to replace 5 broken rods, I looked at the rod I have used for over 28 years and said to myself, "I am only going to buy Ugly Stiks".
Thank you very much Shakespeare, for the fine rods. I am not buying any other.
