I have used the HT Polar brand for years. I have caught fish as large as Northern Pike and Largemouth Bass with no problems. It is also great for pesky perch when set to the sensitive side. I would recommend changing the spool to the 500'. (Tip: it is cheaper to buy a 500' spool from FishUSA rather than goint with the PTU-50 model)

I own and regularly use HT Polar tip-ups with 200' reels. Using them for lake trout I had one run all the line off the spool. Since I'm doing more ice fishing for lake and brown trout I needed a tip-up with more line storage capacity. The HT deluxe fit the bill. I loaded each of them with 50 yards of 20# and 50 yards of 50# dacron. I could get another 50 yards of 50# if I chose to do so. The clips, bottom sounders, and marker bobbers were welcome additions to the package. It is pretty tough to beat HT Polar tip-ups in any model.

I have used Polar Ice Tip Ups for years and years. I have only ordered more because my Family have begun fishing the winter months. They have always worked well. A few things I noticed are the new tip ups have some extras added that really aren't needed. For instance, a bracket that holds the flag down. Traditionally, the flag would just tuck under the notch or flat spool area. I will remove mine on the new tip ups and it can be easily done. I would also like to see flag extensions for these flat laying tip ups. I made my own extensions. They can be problematic in high snow conditions. Don't let this discourage you. These are long lasting tip ups.

These are the best "bang for your buck" out there...I have been using Polar tip-ups for many years and have some that are over 5 years old and still work like new, and I am often guilty of not taking the best care of my equipment, hence why I buy cheap! They are basically so simply designed that the "moving parts" to break are pretty minimal. I would highly recommend these to any "weekend warrior" out for some bass/pickeral/ and trout. I have caught trout as large as 23 inches and 5+ pounds without ANY trouble. Great product and even better price!
