I purchased two Okuma V Series Reels this past fishing season and am quite pleased with both. I use an Okuma V55 on a 10' Carolina Cast Pro rod with 20# braid. This combo casts 1-3 oz metal lures out of sight. Have landed striped bass up to 20# in the Cape Cod Canal's current with no problems at all.
The Okuma V85 is mounted on a Carolina Cast Pro 12' rod. Spooled with 50# braid this is an awsome combo for casting and jigging lures in the 2-7 oz range. This reel has easily handled striped bass over 30#, again in the strong Cape Cod Canal current and from the surf.
I would highly reccomend the Okuma V Series reels to anyone. They are reasonably priced, have a very smooth drag, smooth reeling. Reels balance very well. Have not had one single problem with either reel.
Comments about Okuma Fishing Tackle Corp. Okuma VSystem Spinning Reels:
a screw came loose under the rotor after fighting a 25lb king and rendered the reel useless because it wedged itself and caused the rotor to lock-up. as far as i can see the screw was merely cosmetic and should be eliminated. also the spool bent as is does not sit securely on the spindle. i'm not impressed with the rigidity of the reel. unfortunately the 16 bearings are spinning a flimsy spool system which could easily be redesigned and strengthened. i'm having it repaired and i will give it a second chance but the flimsy spool leaves a bad taste in my mouth. make you stuff stronger Okuma! fisherman need ultra reliable stuff especially for the money we spend.

Comments about Okuma Fishing Tackle Corp. Okuma VSystem Spinning Reels:
I had used this reel with PowerPro 20lb braid for 7 days about 4 hrs each and it was awesome...best reel I've ever owned. On the 8th day, 3rd cast, the bail locked and could only be retrieved by manually turning the bail. Once freed up, I'd get about 3 cranks and it would lock again. For [$] and 16 bearings, it should stand this simple task. This reel has been sent back to the manufacturer and has been there for about a month. I hope I get it back and that I don't encounter this disappointment a second time. I would not recommend this reel to anyone just yet.

My recently purchased Okuma V-65A has worked great during the spring striper run. As a long time Penn customer, it's way to early to comment on reliability, durability, and availability of parts and service.

own a VS 40 for bass, walleye, and pike. very smooth casting, has a great feel to it, and very reliable. I also have a VS 55. I use this for salmon, steelhead and brown trout. Excellent for long cast, unbelievable drag system, and plenty of power to bring in 20 pound kings.
