Water Gremlin makes the finest split shot. Gremlin Green Split Shot is made from TIN and will not cause lead poisoning in waterfowl. These are available in both traditional removable split shot and a round split shot. The removable split shot can be pinched closed or open easily. The round shot tends to hang up less in the bottom of the stream or lake, but pliers or forceps are needed to remove it. The environmentally friendly split shot is about one half the weight of lead shot.

Well, its not lead but it will work. It weighs about a third less so you find yourself using more shot to get the same weight.
You don't want to bite lead for health reasons, you don't want to bite tin shot because it will bust your teeth. It is harder and you will need to use pliers to crimp them down.
Nothing will exactly replace lead but at least there is an option.

Like the tin part, and being safe. Note sizes do not go small enough to really do effective nymphing with smaller flies. Would be nice to have a smaller environmentally safe size.

Gremlin Green tin split shot is one of the best products I've found for subsurface fly fishing. It's non-toxic and is available in several sizes. Their "traditional" (round) split shot in sizes B and BB are ideal for ticking flies along the bottom without getting hung up. For some reason, this product is hard to find in stores (most merchants only sell lead split shot), so its great to find it at FishUSA.com!
