I clean the ice surface with a few turns of a hand auger,dump a little water and take a reading. The batteries must be fresh so I keep the unit in an inner pocket to keep them warm. A great time saver for finding the depth you want without having to drill alot of holes or unpack your flasher. If someone tells you that it can be used to find fish through the ice don't believe it. I've had it for a few years so it seems durable enough.

i use it for icefishing walleye in northern ontario canada.the ice up here is 90cm about 3ft thick so drilling holes kind of sucks.with this product i can quickly find dropoffs or humps.i have never had problems with the product even in minus 25c.it saves time and energy and pinpoints me right on the spot on the spot.best money i ever spent.

this product will not work--even activate--when it gets cold and by cold i mean only 20F. this is even with fresh lithium batteries. a complete waste of money for ice fishermen.

i bought it to find the drop-offs.it worked one season.very dissapointed in this product.also purchased strikemaster auger 2nd year a bearing in the gear box went out drilling my first hole of the morning.havent had good luck with strikemaster products.
