On real cold days ice fishing holes can quickly freeze over with a 1/4" or more of ice. Useing the chipper end one can easly clear the ice build up, pull the fish through the hole or extrat a frozen in tipup at the end of the day.
I always turn round hardwood handles, split turning and fasten the halves over the flat steel. Having the wood for the handle alows for bare handed use without making contact with the cold steel and looks great. The weight of the extra hardwood makes for more effective chipping and hand grip. I have fitted several skimmers in the manner and given them as gifts to friends and family members.

It is a very solid piece of equipment. Thick construction all around. The ruler is very useful; no more arguing or guessing about ice thickness.
