G. Loomis Rod Terminology

ACTION

G. Loomis Rod Action Rod action refers to the flex characteristics of a rod, varying from slow to extra-fast. An extra-fast action rod flexes mainly at the tip. Slower (or softer) actions flex throughout the entire length of the rod. Moderate action rods fall in between.

G. Loomis tailors the action of each of its rods to the particular fishing application for which they are designed, taking into account the preferred lure or fly action, optimum casting range, fighting power, the feeling of the rod, and countless other variables.


TAPER

For G.Loomis taper is the rating system used in the G.Loomis catalog created to help you select the best rod for your casting style. Rod taper refers to where the rod bends during the casts and while fighting a fish. Many people refer to the taper as the action of a rod.

For fly rods, generally slower tapers result in casting larger loops, because the rod will bend in a lower portion of the rod, causing the tip to travel through a wider arc. A faster taper produces tighter loops and offers a broader distance and comfort range.


POWER

For fly rods, rod power, or stiffness, refers to how much the rod flexes during casting and fighting a fish. The softer the rod, the smoother, more delicate the feel at shorter distances, while providing more shock protection of light tippet. Stiffer rods produce higher line speeds, tighter loops, more distance and control in the wind. In many cases using a fly line that is heavier or lighter than the recommended line on a rod will help achieve the perfect balance for the individual angler. A medium power fly rod will cast comfortably at short through moderate distance. A medium stiff rod is the most versatile power rating. It is comfortable at short distances with enough power to make long casts. For increased distance and tighter loops, a stiff power rod is still comfortable to cast. An extra-stiff power rod has extra muscle for fighting very large fish, but is not an easy casting rod.

All spin, cast and saltwater blanks are rated for power in a 00 - 8 numeric basis. It is normally the last number of each model number. The exception being a "-2" or "-3", which refers a multi-piece blank, and the number of pieces. The higher the number, the stronger/stiffer the blank. The lower the number the lighter/softer the rod. Power ratings are group specific, for example: steelhead blanks do not have the same "4-power" rating as a surf rod blank, or a bass rod. Each are compared only to the blanks in their specific-use category.
