The Vexilar LPS-1 is a hand held digital depth finder. Take it wherever you go: Fly-in fishing trips, ice fishing (shoots through ice), canoe trips, float tubing, and even scuba diving. It's an ideal depth finder for tip-up fishing where a full-blown ice fishing depth finder is not required.

The LPS-1 is easy to use. Just point, push the button, and let go. The unit will lock the reading on the display and then shut itself off automatically.

Features of this unit include the following:

  • 200 kHz 22 degree built-in transducer
  • Reads depth from 1.8 to 200 feet
  • Backlit display for night use
  • Automatic shutoff
  • Uses one 9 volt battery
  • Weighs just 11 ounces
  • Floats

This unit would NOT read through ice. But to give it credit, the ice was white, cloudy ice. I have other sonar units, and they don't either, something about air mixed in the ice. When we cut a hole, we can now tell depth, and mark fish in an instant. Nice to have for that, before we dropped a jig on a line. My other sonar are too slow to deploy rapidly. Over all, I'd say this is a good product, depending on what you want it for. It was a gift for my brother to bring him kicking, and screaming into the 21st century

Pros: Fast deployment, accurate reading

Cons: won't read through the ice, regular batteries, should be rechargeable

Best Uses: ice fishing

Poor Product

About Me:

This is a poor product and extremely expensive (I bought it at [$]) it does not work as advertised.I bought this item to replace my old StrikeMaster handheld sonar as it had finally broken and was no longer made.I read the reviews about all the "cheaper" models and they were all terrible. This was the only one that I read any good reviews on, so I sucked it up and forked over the big cash.I took it out icefishing on New Years and it performed terribly. It has an extremely difficult time picking up the bottom depth thru a clean ice hole (forget about trying to use it thru the ice itself). I would have to try 4 or 5 times to get it to finally register on the bottom (if I could get it to do it at all.)The on/off button is a slide switch on top (unlike a clickable membrane button like better designed products have) which quickly gets iced up after water gets on it. This makes the button stick either on or off and as the product relies on the spring-loaded nature of the switch to cycle itself, its pretty much useless.Maybe this works for divers or something in the nice warm waters but for Minnesota winter fishing forget about it.

Pros: Lightweight

Cons: Difficult To Use, Poor Design

Best Uses: none
