About Me:

This is a 13' Wild River rod rated for 2-6 lb. test. I spooled my reel with P-Line HydraFloat 15 lb. test (8 lb. mono diameter). At first I thought "no way is this going to work. Too light for big fish, too long to get through the brush". I was wrong. Breaking the rod in half makes it 6.5 feet long, east to maneuver and put in the truck bed. I took it out and promptly caught 5 salmon! This broke a three week skunk for me so needless to say, I was happy. The long rod handled the fish well (up to about 20 lbs.) and the hook sets are awesome! If you set the hook hard while the float and bait are close to you, prepare to duck. Even at about 100 feet out, a hard hook set will pull the float under the water and move it about 5 feet. I was able to use 8 lb. test leader, which was the difference that allowed me to catch fish in the very clear water. It is also extremely easy to retrieve line at the end of a long drift. The long rod will lift a lot of the line off of the water so that the float just skips along towards you. It is much easier to retrieve line with this rod that it is with my 10' rod that is rated 12-17 lbs. I don't know if this rod will handle a real bruiser of a salmon or steelhead but I can't wait to find out.

Wild River 13'6"
NW Indiana

What could be better than a float rod by St. Croix?  This spinning rod with sliding rinds doubles as my float rod for centerpinning steelhead in NW Indiana & SW Michigan  Lake Michigan tributaries.  I already had the 11'6" and had landed many a chromer on it, but when I saw the closeout sale on the 13'6" I couldn't say no because everyone, everywhere knows that Croix builds the best rods and stand behind them.  Go ahead and spend the extra and get what you really want... sensitivity coupled with the backbone to bring in the big ones!!

St Croix makes very good fishing poles.  When my buddy out fished me seven walleyes to one, he was using a St Croix fishing pole. I was not.  I was using my new "unbreakable pole" with exactly the same jig and body.  Tipping the jig with the same minnows.  Casting in the same areas, but he caught seven fish in a row.  I had caught the first fish to locate the walleyes for him, then I caught zero more.  He offered me his pole after the seventh fish.  I didn't want to use it, but thought why not try it.  First cast into the same spot that I had cast the other pole, I had a walleye on.   Two casts later I had another.   I was HOOKED.  I won't buy another brand again.

I'm doing this review for buying two more St Croix fishing poles. One is for me and the other was for my fishing buddy that turned me onto these excellent fishing poles.

Final statement ... Don't hesitate to spend the money, these poles are worth it!

Pros: Reliable product, Great warranty
Cons: Won't use other poles again
Best Uses: JIGS, lindy rigs
