Ross CLA Fly Reels carry the name of one of Ross' oldest, and most popular series, however the CLA is a departure from the original Cimarron design. It incorporates Ross' newest generation drag mechanism that is incredibly smooth, heat resistant, and provides a level of stopping power not typically found in a moderately priced fly reel. The CLA sets the standard for what anglers should expect from an American made, high-quality, reasonably priced reel.
The mechanical operation of the CLA is consistent throughout the series, but improvements have been made to the CLA in sizes 4-7 to support their use when battling bigger fish. When comparing them to the smaller sized CLA reels, you will find that the size 4-7 reels have a larger drag knob, handle and spool cap, but most importantly, they have a stronger drag system. To ensure smooth performance with fast-running fish, these larger four sized have been equipped with oil impregnated bushings for spool rotation. The frame and spool have also been reinforced to eliminate flexing. With a wide range of sizes available, the CLA series is appropriate for any fishing application, including Spey.
The Ross CLA Fly Reels have the following features:
-
Strong, smooth, and sensitive disc drag system
-
Friction based Delrin drag material that is impervious to heat, compression, glazing, aging and crumbling
-
Fully ventilated, perfectly balanced spool and frame
-
Perfect ratio of spool width to arbor diameter that provides all the benefits of large arbor technology
-
Pleasant incoming and outgoing click
-
Seamless transition between line-in and drag engagement (no start-up friction)
The table below describes each of the Ross CLA Fly reels.

Like many of you, I try to buy American-made products when I can. That said, I hope the CLA6 I ordered lives up to its' reputation. There is a LOT of plastic behind the spool. The entire drag housing is plastic and the clicker tab is the most cheesy thing I've ever seen in a reel - let alone one that costs this much. Ross reels have a good reputation for durability and performance, but the materials of construction in this reel are a letdown.

I work as a guide on the Russian and Kenai rivers in Alaska and will put my CLR 6wt up against any fish in those streams other than King salmon.
