Okuma Avenger ABF Spinning Reel

The Okuma Avenger ABF Baitfeeder Spinning Reels reflects a refinement and precision that is the culmination of a decade of research and development. The Avenger ABF Baitfeeders are a unique combination of tournament grade spinning reels and Okuma's patented live line baitfeeding system.

The Okuma Avenger ABF Baitfeeder Spinning Reels put a new spin on the traditional world of reels, and more importantly, what can be expected from them. Quite simply, these are ultra smooth, precision crafted reels. The light weight CNC machined spools are fitted with super smooth oil-soaked felt washers. The reels feature six sealed ball bearings, for smooth operation.

The Okuma Avenger ABF Baitfeeder Spinning Reels use Okuma's live baitfeeding system. The easy-to-reach lever (located on the body behind the handle) disengages the spool to allow the line to run freely. The tension of the free spool can be adjusted with the rear adjustment (which looks and works like a rear drag). The bait feeding system allows a fish to pick up the bait and run without feeling the drag of the reel. When you are ready to set the hook, you flip down the baitfeeder lever to engage the drag, and the conventional front drag takes over.

The Quick Set anti-reverse system guarantees rock solid hook sets and eliminates handle play. The Avenger will easily gain a position in the arsenal of the most discerning of tournament pros.

Features of the Okuma Avenger ABF Baitfeeder Spinning Reels include:

  • Multi-disk Japanese oiled felt drag washers
  • 6 ball bearings for ultimate smoothness
  • 1 Quick Set Anti-Reverse roller bearing
  • Precision machine-cut brass pinion gear
  • Rigid diecast aluminum handle design
  • Handle can be switched for left or right hand retrieve
  • Hydro Block water tight drag sealList Item
  • Patented On/Off auto trip bait feeding function
  • Spare graphite spool

Good reel but the bait feeder drag hangs up.
Reviewed:

About Me:

I've had 2 of the a40's for a year. I fish almost exclusively for carp, freshwater drum, and suckers. The reel works great except for one of the bait feeder drags doesn't always engage the first time. It almost cost me one of my rods. I just check to see if it is feeding line when I engage the drag. If it hangs up. I just crank the handle once. It usually engages properly the 2nd time. If I had it to do over again. I would go with the A50 or 65. The 40 is good on small waters, but lacks the line capacity I want for distance casting. It's good for about 80 yards, but when a big carp goes screaming off at that distance. It can easily get out another 50 yards pretty quick. Which doesn't leave you much line left if the carp breaks you off at that distance.

Must for baitfishing

About Me:
Avid Fisher
I'm an avid carp fisherman so I have to use baitrunners. The ABFs baitrunners are great for carp fishing because I can be rest assured that my rod won't get dragged into the lake when a large carp takes it. You really need the baitrunner option when baiting fishing for large fish for piece of mind. Overall, the reel casts great and the drag is good. However, in about a year or two the bail will not close completely after the cast. Also the maximum line capacity on the spool is inaccurate. I would have given the ABF a higher rating if there were no issues with the bail.

Pros: Line Doesn't Tangle, Easy Casting, Smooth Drag System, Durable

Cons: Poor Construction, Hard To Maintain

Best Uses: Shore Casting

About Me:

The ABF-20a reel is the smallest and lightest baitfeeder that I was seeking for use with flag activated rod tip ups while icefishing. I plan on using the baitfeeder function to give the right ammount of tension to a shiner to keep it in place but allow the flag to trip and fish to run with the bait in a freespool manner. I am looking forward to reeling in some larger fish through the ice with this set up as well as using it in open water situations Carp fishing.

I liked this product esp. the fact that it has a bait runner option. But I burned one reel out two summer's ago and then I got a replacement reel with the warranty. Then this past summer the handle and shaft broke as I was reeling a 42 1/2" striper ,luckily I had tired it out and was able to pull it in by hand. Now i'm trying to find part's for it so I can fix and test my luck with it next year or just stick with my Penn and Shimano baitrunner for striper's and bluefish. Maybe if I do fix it I'll use just for fresh water? At least I got my money back on the warranty again .I did like the product I just wish it was more durable.

i bought this reel pretty late in the season last year so i didnt get to really use it but once, then this year i havent really went out so much been real busy but what time i have got use it i love it. i like the fact that if i am useing live bait or fishing on bottom all i have to do is flip the abf switch and sit back and relax. I also like how smooth it casts and reels. the only problem that i have had is this last time i went i was fishing off bottom i had the abf switched on and all the sudden something grabbed ahold and took off i could hear the reel whizzing as the fish was running with my line so i reach down flipped the switch off and set the hookand the fight was on. I fought this fish for about ten minutes and all the sudden the handle broke right off i couldnt believe it the reel is still practically brand new. I love everything else about the reel and i would definetly recomend this reel to anyone, the only downfall to this reel is the handle it just doesnt seem as durable as the rest of the reel.

Baitfeeder system is simply awesome. IN the past I've always hated to leave the bail open as line will spool off and tangle in the wind. So I've played with fire and tried to figure out how many turns of my spinning reel's drag wheel I need to go from a real light tension, like in the Okuma's baitfeeder drag mode, to normal fish-fighting drag. These will be the staple of my bait fishing arsenal for my guiding on a ME lake.
