 >  > Ion Electric Ice Augers

Ion 40V High Performance Electric Augers are the first high performance electric ice auger. It comes in a 6" or 8" auger blade that cuts holes just like a gas-powered auger but without the bone-jarring, out of control experience that is characteristic of power augers.

With the Ion 40V High Performance Electric Augers, all you need to do is charge the batter and go out on the lake and start drilling. The battery on this auger will cut up to 40 holes of 2 feet  ice with a single charge. No gas, no oil, no fumes means this auger is able to be used indoors.

Features of the Ion 40V High Performance Electric Augers include:

  • On-board, high-energy 40V MAX lithium ion battery
  • Easy-grip handlebars
  • Large, ergonomically positioned trigger
  • 12" auger extension included
  • Compact, lightweight transmission with planetary gears
  • 6" or 8" steel auger
  • Straight tough design blades

About Me:
This my first ice auger, mainly because of the weight is the reason I bought it and really like it so far. Drills thru 20" of ice with no problems quietly! I do keep the battery warm in my coveralls when not using and charge it each night. It was a good choice in getting and ice auger. Price wise? Look at the price of the top of the line augers out there and they run the same cost plus gas, noise, weight. It was a no brainer for me.

Pros: fast, light weight, quiet

Cons: must be kept warm in pocket or shelter.

About Me:
Just bought a few weeks ago. I live in Maine and get to ice fish a lot. Had a jiffy for years and was just sick and tired of mixing gas and pulling the cord several times and smelling of gas. Ion cuts great no sound no gas no oil. I can put it inside my truck now with no worries of gas getting inside now. Haven't seen a bad review yet of this. It's the future and it should be since its very environmentally friendly to our lakes. Love this auger, so far so good. Fish USA was very helpful too. Thanks.

Bought one of these begining of the season. At first, it was pulling me down while cutting the ice like butter. was doing fifteen plus holes every outing. Ice was 1' to 2' thick.

Fast forward a month and about 70 holes. I've been having trouble getting more than 12 holes out of a charge. Ice is now 2 1/2 feet thick. It doesn't pull now, I have to push a little.

Now, yesterday in fact. I noticed the one blade is chipped a bit and the other is chipped a lot. Tried sharpening till they felt good (better) and hit the ice again.

Got 2 holes 3' thick and gave up at that because pushing the auger hard was the only way to get a hole done.  One blade broke at the screw hole clean across.

I expected a better (longer) experience out of this machine.

Blades are crap. Never had a set get so chipped so fast.

I have new ones on order and we'll see what happens with the fresh edge.

Pros: light weight, battery charges quickly

When it was new, and the ice was 12" thick it worked fantastic. It was actually pulling me down while it was cutting. Was getting all the holes I needed and more. Now, ( i've fished around ten times so far) the Auger requires a lot of work just to get going in the ice. It dances all over until it catches then I find I'm doing most the work pushing it down.

Ice now is over 3' thick so that's a lot of work. The blades still feel sharp but that might be an illusion. With the ice that thick I'm lucky to get 14 holes out of a charge.

An email to the manufacturer yeilded a "that sounds right if it's really cold. You should buy a second battery."

One of the blades is now chipped so I'm  going to try a set of new blades and see what's up.

Pros: Light, fast, EASY on the shoulders!!

Cons: My blade began to dull after about 60 holes

Purchased this auger as an avid ice fisherman and jigger. This thing is not made to handle the cold. The battery MUST be kept warm for optimal use. I have emails from Ion stating it needs to be kept at least 40deg.. It will pop your first holes ( I do 20) with ease. But if the battery is left out in the cold on the auger for a couple hours and then try to use it, it will start to drill and roughly 5secs in will cut off.. This means the battery is dead due to the cold..What this means is you have to remove the battery and lug the brick around in your pocket while not in use. If you have a heated shanty, that would work too. I have neither as Im always on the move. I have also heard of the palstic handles shatterin into pieces if dropped in the cold.  None of this is mentioned in their advertising. Pretty sad they mislead customers so badly. Mine was returned from where I purchased it.

Pros: Lightweight, no gas, quiet

Cons: Battery cant handle cold, must be kept warm in pocket or shelter.

Best Uses: 40deg days

What a cutting machine. We haven't had ice thicker than 6" yet this season, but my Ion has been fantastic cutting holes. It's lightweight and very powerful. My old strikemaster electra 12000 cant compare with this one. I can get 50X the number of holes with the Ion as i got with the other electric. I believe the Ion is the auger of the future and most ice guys will eventually go to them.

Pros: great cutting, fast, and lightweight

Cons: none

Best Uses: Drills lots of holes., If pulling out by hand and foot, this is the one to have.

As I've gotten older, weight and ease of operation have become more important.  In this regard the Ion electric is incredible.  I'm once again actually scouting fish by drilling a lot of holes until I find them because it is now so easy.  The only issue I have is that the blade seems to be getting dull.  I've only drilled about 50 holes.  It no longer grabs the ice and drills the hole without putting my weight on it like it first did.  I couldn't find anywhere in the Battle Lake, Mn area that stocked replacement blades.  I don't know if it can be sharpened but would think that it should remain sharper longer.  Maybe a blade made out of harder steel would help.  I would gladly pay the higher price  if it were available.  All in all, I'm very impressed, but will buy a couple of sets of blades before my next ice fishing outing.

Pros: Lightweight, powerful, doesn't bind up in bottom of hole, battery charges quickly

Cons: My blade began to dull after 100 holes

Love this auger so far, drilled 15 holes in 8" of ice Saturday, battery still showed fully charged.  I don't leave the battery at camp, bring it home and keep it in the house, says it will shorten life when stored below 7F and it's going to 20 below at camp this week. Drilling holes is SO easy now and quiet also.

Pros: quiet, fast, EASY on the shoulders!!

but catching on quickly !

I have been ice fishing for 30+ and have an old eskimo auger probably that old,and every year I would get that auger out and fix what needed fixing, spark plus, carb needing diaphram and smelling to high heaven of gas.Again, same story this year, get it out try get running, needed carb fixed, would run with choke partially closed, take carb off,gas smell all over, and my lovely wife says"let go see what is out there." Go to LLBean, looked at augers and they have many jiffy augers but I wasn't sold on those.I spied this Ion battery auger and had to even ask what it was !!! I said,SERIOUSLY !!! As many of you know their policy is if you don't like it,blah blah blah ! So in my mind,I was going to take it out, drill hole and return it to prove it was a joke.! Well, let me tell you that this thing kicks butt!!!I totally shocked me !! It's light,it's fast, seems very sturdy,(might not last 30 years like my ol eskimo)but whew! This thing rocks!! welcome to the 21st century !!! Ice fishing made easy this year... Real easy! My wife can use it ! Can't wait to get the granson out and let them go at it! Bring on the Ice Derby's!!!!

used it last wekend in 16-18 inches of ice, it cut beautifully on full charge, I cut 25 holes in 18 inches of ice last friday, weather gpt dpwn to minus 22 F, it still drilled like a champ. I used it today for the first time in 5 days with out re charging it, it started to quit with pressure after 6 holes, with light pressure it would still cut nice, bear inmind the blades are still very sharp..i wonder with duller blades if it would still cut ice.  so far a good investment.  very light, well built steady, no jumping or hopping, overt all well build and a nice unit

I tried out my new ion ice auger today. It worked like a champ and cut thru the ice very quickly without stalling even when breaking thru.  It is very light wight and easy to carry around.  And  as you would expect it is very quiet. It seems very well constructed and rugged enough. The batteries work well.  I would recommend you get a spare battery. I think it is a stretch to say it will drill 40 holes in ice two feet thick.  I got 35 holes in about 10 inches of ice.  If you like to search for your fish and drill lots of holes get a second battery.      Jim

Bought one of these new this year in Canada for $550. I have used a few times and love it so far.

I cannot stress how awesome it is to start drilling with the push of a button.  Its compact, light weight and the  lack of a combustible engine make our situation (multiple users) ideal.  There are zero external parts to break or bend.  Its built sturdy and I look forward to using it every time.  The season is early and I ve only drilled a couple dozen holes but it makes it through the ice quickly and without issue.

Last winter I assisted in the testing of the Ion electric ice auger on Lake Vermilion.

I could not believe the ease that this auger cut through 30 inches of ice and how many holes that we got with only one battery charge! 30 plus holes and still going!

It's light wieght and low torque on my arms was simply amazing!

I said that as soon as this auger became available on the market that I would buy one and retire my gas auger! Ordered one yesterday!
