Drennan "Piker" Crystal Pike Floats

Drennan Piker float may be just the edge you need to be successful during a trip for steelhead and salmon. The Drennan Piker float is made of clear plastic with its shape allowing a clean strike with minimal disturbance at the surface of the water. This heavy duty float is great for large, deep rivers.

There are three main ways to use the Piker float, which are described in detail on each individually wrapped Piker.

  • Stillwater Waggler style with Float Stops and Link Swivel
  • The streamlined Piker is also the perfect river float and can be fished slider style using a simple stop knot
  • Fixed between two Float Stops at the top and a Float Stop and Bead at the bottom

We stock the Drennan Piker float in four sizes ranging in lengths from 3 3/4" to 7 1/2". In addition to the length, each float is marked with a gram weight on the side. This weight is not the weight of the float itself, but rather the amount of weight in grams that the float will support.

These floats are mixed colors - some are clear, some are very light green, and some are very light brown, but all are translucent or clear. They all have a high visibility red top.

About Me:
This float is a great substitute for my favorite Drennan float for steelheads, the loafer float. This float is easier than the loafer float in regards to adjusting depth. Rides higher than the loafer float. However, since the float is much bigger and has more air, it does create more resistance once pulled under water, which may spook some steelheads. Otherwise, this is my go to for fast moving waters. I recommend the loafer floats for slower moving creeks.

About Me:
These floats are absolutely the best for float fishing. I fish salmon and steelhead in British Columbia and I have used almost every float available in our market and am absolutely convinced there is nothing better than the Drennan. It is somewhat expensive but " you get what you pay for". I have been able to detect more takes, I can even detect the slightest touch by a coho and strike before the float even sink. If you use a 20gram Drennan, match it with a 21-22 gram weight and you will have an ideal short float setup.

About Me:
Fish for steelhead over 250 days a year

I have been using the Drennan 20gm and 11gm exclusively for steelhead fishing about a year now. I find them to be durable, easy to cast longer distances and they track nicely in faster seams. I have only cracked one bobber when I got it caught on a cable and used a little too much force to break free. I particularly like the 11gm bobber in the low clear water that summer steelhead inhabit. The green shade has been my favorite because of the stealth it provides. The only other problem I have had is the small, bottom tip splitting at the hole after fighting several nasty summer steelhead. It will cause the mainline to slip into the hole and the bobber doesn't slide on the mainline. This can be remedied quickly with a pair of scissors and a metal nail file...clip it and file down smooth. You are ready for action! I highly recommend the bobber for jig, bead, bait and bobber-dragging/dogging.

Pros: Casts Well, Indestructible, Good strike recognition

Cons: little spendy, Can crack if it hits rock

Best Uses: For clear water steelhead, Jig fishing steelhead, FloatDrift Fishing

In my opinion or experience with these floats they are of the highest  quality and grade. They track very accurate in even the heavy currents. I have caught Steelhead in many different high and low clear water levels. They are worth every cent you may pay for one. Some buy these for clear low water situations, but I now use these under all conditions.

Pros: Very stable and easy to see in the water.

Maximum floatation with minimum water resistance. Lightest floats I've used for the amount of floatation they provide. I've fished these floats for 4years now and I have never had one break on me. When I troll for steelhead/salmon it doesnt matter what float you use...your presentation is always an issue. I troll with the #5 and have made my own weights out of hollow pencil lead on a wire that has little rings at both ends to tie too. Each weight made for each individual float. The thin weight cuts drag down to at least half. Anyhow, they are in my mind the best float you can buy when it comes to slips, and I've used them all. Advice to the other reviews "dont cast into rocks" and they wont break. These float go down with the most of ease so they dont tend to spoke light hitting fish. Worth every cent.

After being turned on to these floats by a client even after watching him crack one while on a trip, I ordered 7 of them. I love the way they react in the water, but take some doing to get them to fish right. I jig and float fish... the bobber has a tendency to get ahead of your presentation, ie... dragging your jig and shrimp behind the bobber making the head of your jig instead of the body the first thing the fish sees. Limit your leader length and put some shot on the end to get rid of this... my catch rate skyrocketed after I did this.. CON and a BIG CON. I have cracked 3 of the bobbers on 5 trips. Extremely fragile. I have 4 clients already purchasing these bobbers because of trips, and I hate to see, and have already told them, of what I have gone through with them.

Pros: Easy To Handle

Cons: none

Best Uses: none

I use these floats with my noodle rod to float worms at the local lakes to see what will take the worm. That would be mostly sunfish, of course, but I also catch white perch, yellow perch, and largemouth bass. This is a much better float than the Thill Gold Metal floats that I had been using. It can be rigged as a waggler or center slider. At Lake Marburg the there are big sunfish suspended at about 15 feet by the bridge piers and this float works good in a 'slip bobber' setup. It floats great and is easy to see.

Pros: Highly Visible, Versatile, Durable, Good For Variety Of Fish

Cons: Expensive

Best Uses: Lakes, Fresh Water

When used with the recommended weight, it is extremely sensitive. Because it is soft and pliable, it enters the water quietly on casts and that, combined with its clarity, gets me more hook-ups.

Pros: Easy To Use, Supple even in icy water, Effective in "skinny" H2O, Durable, Easy To Maintain, Functional

Cons: none

Best Uses: Fresh Water
