The Sportsman Electric Downrigger
from Big Jon
The Big Jon's Sportsman electric downrigger is loaded with features that make this rigger a popular choice among both professional and recreation anglers.
Like all Big Jon Downriggers, the Sportsman features precision machined aircraft grade aluminum construction and is given a protective anodized finish for corrosion resistance in any conditions. The 2 ft. boom of the Sportsman is designed for the rigger to be used straight back from the transom.
Features of the Sportsman Electric Downrigger include:
- Aircraft grade aluminum construction with protective, anodized finish
- 2' J-boom design
- Powerful 12 volt sealed motor with adjustable disc clutch
- Single clamp-on rod holder (Model RH00409)
- 4"x4" mounting plate with hold down knobs
- 200' of stainless steel cable
- Line counter (Measures in feet)
- Line release
We include a free Big Jon swivel base with each Sportsman downrigger.

Great product and easy to assemble and use. Product manual well written. Up/down switch is too sensitive, too easy to pass the center off position to the up position. Maybe a spring loaded (momentary up/down rocker) switch would be a better solution. Once you get used to the feel of the switch, controling it is easy.

very strong. my mate did not set clutch correctly
bomb got caught up and 200lb. wire broke .no damage to boat,bracket,or arm of downrigger

Two major additions that needs to be done:
1. The swivel sits are useful feature. You can easily remove the downriggers from the boat if you do not need them. However, you need to buy a downrigger plug and receptacle.
2. Provided line release clip is not a good and needs to be replaced.

A perfect rigger for my 18 ft. Lund, the swivel is a must. Strong and silent with a professional look to it. I have three in use now and never a breakdown. I fish solo quite often so it is nice to just push a button to get the cable out of the water fast. Almost perfect, just needs an automatic shutoff.

I shopped around and this is the best deal on these downriggers I could find if you add in the free swivel bases. A [$] value I couldn't find a better deal anywhere on the internet. The downriggers speak for themself. Big Jon makes high quility riggers. This is one happy guy!

I will use these riggers mainly for salmon and steelhead fishing in lake Ontario or wherever these fish are found.They are easy to use,just push a button up and down to the desired level.No hard work or sweating..very enjoyable.There is nothing I can say that that are bad about these riggers,(just if the fish are not co-operating is my only thing).I would recommend these to all.
