G. Loomis GL3 Series Fly Rods

G. Loomis GL3 Fly Rods The G. Loomis GL3 Series Fly Rods are one of the the best performance values on the market today. These are medium-fast action rods which are extremely forgiving and very lightweight, which actually helps to minimize the most common mistake in casting: the tailing loop. Designed with a multi-taper tip, they feel slightly stiffer than other G. Loomis rod families, generating high line speed with a slightly wider loop. That extra stiffness also makes them quite powerful, capable of making nice long, accurate casts. Some rod companies charge twice what a GL3 will cost you. But if you're looking for a powerful, high-performance graphite rod that will let you cast like you know you can, none of them will outperform a GL3.

We currently stock these rods in 4 to 9 weights. Generally they are in stock and ready for immediate delivery. These beautiful rods come with a Loomis rod tube and cloth sack.

G. Loomis GL3 Fly Rod Handles

To order one of these fine rods, and for details of a specific rod, please select one of the links in the table above.

  • FR1084 - This is a versatile 9-foot fly rod, good for small to medium flies on medium to large streams and lakes. It's delicate enough to handle all but the most microscopic of patterns. The GL3's fast action makes it more comfortable in larger streams than other 4 weights can handle.

  • FR1025 - This is a highly versatile size for small through medium trout flies and corresponding waters. Very, very light feeling compared to standard 9-footers, the 8-1/2' length helps to speed up the false cast cycle. The GL3 is the stiffest of the models.

  • FR1085 - This is the bread and butter trout rod for most anglers. A great choice for all-around versatility and performance. This GL3 is a little stiffer, punchier version thanks to its multi-taper tip.

  • FR1086 - Ten years ago, a nine-foot six-weight was the standard for western trout anglers. As rod materials have improved and rods have become lighter and stronger, the 6 weight has taken a back seat to the 5 weight. It's now the "in between" size for the transition from trout fishing to warmwater species. Capable of remarkably long casts, the 1086 also has the ability to make delicate presentations-especially in windy conditions where a 5 weight can't quite handle it. This is a good streamer rod, and it admirably casts the oversized, wind-resistant poppers, stoneflies and hoppers so popular on the larger streams of the high desert. It's also an excellent rod for ultralight saltwater applications on the flats, going after bonefish and small mangrove snapper.

  • FR1087 - This is a powerful rod for a variety of fly fishing situations. Excellent for trout where streamers and sinking lines are used, it's also a good start-up size for bonefish in light wind conditions. What's more, it'll handle smallmouth bass and other warmwater fish that require streamer flies and popping bugs. This is a very popular rod for steelhead fishing on the Great Lakes tributaries. It has Loomis handle 53, which has a small fighting butt.

  • FR1088 - This 9' 8 weight is a versatile, medium-heavy outfit suited to larger flies and floating or sinking lines. It's the number one choice among saltwater anglers for flats fishing, as it's capable of handling the predominant flies used in that environment. The GL3 has a stiffer, more punchy feeling than the GLX. This is also a popular rod for larger steelhead fishing on the Great Lakes tributaries. It has Loomis handle 53, which has a small fighting butt.

  • FR1089 - Here's a truly great rod for heavy-duty freshwater applications and light-duty saltwater use. It casts like a bullet in the wind and has the power to handle all salmon species. It's the rod of choice for flats fishing when the wind comes up and it will pull a big redfish back to the boat in a heartbeat. Bass fly rodders love this model because it has the power to handle the large, bulky deer hair flies and poppers so popular for taking big largemouths out of lily pads and heavy cover. Experienced anglers also prefer this rod for larger salmon and steelhead fishing on the Great Lakes tributaries. It has Loomis handle 53, which has a small fighting butt.

  • FR1088-4 - Our number one saltwater fly rod, in a convenient four-piece travel size. See specs for FR1088 for more details.

  • FR1089-4 - FSee specs for Model FR1089 for more information. What goes for it also goes for this.

  • FR1088/9-3 Mega - This 9' 3-piece is a very affordable, very pleasing saltwater flats rod. It'll take on anything from bonefish to redfish to snook. And it's quite powerful, yet easy to load with a #8 line for most situations, or a #9 when bigger flies are required, or when the wind is blowing.

  • FR10810/11-3 Mega - An excellent all-purpose bigger game rod, this model works well for dorado and small to medium tarpon. It's also an excellent choice when you're fishing the flats for redfish or snook and the wind's really howling. Yes, a 10/11 is on the powerful side for such game, but when it's hurricane season this baby really slices through the wind.

  • FR1688/9-3 - A remarkable summer-run steelhead rod that's especially good on large western rivers where distance is an issue and backcasts are limited due to trees and brush. If you chase Atlantic salmon, this is a great spring rod for the likes of the infamous Miramachi. It gives you precise control on either Spey or overhand casts and it's capable of keeping a lot of line in the air, even with larger flies.

  • FR1689/10-3 - A very versatile all-purpose size, one step up from the 8/9. If you had to choose just one rod to cross over from summer to wintertime, this would be it. It's light enough to comfortably fish the summer runs, but has a little more power for the heavier sinking lines typically used through winter-run conditions. A good light-duty Atlantic salmon rod.

  • FR18010/11-3 - This is the most popular big rod for wintertime fishing or Atlantic salmon fishing in the 20 lb-plus range. It's an excellent choice for anglers looking to cast big flies a long way. Anglers looking for a king salmon rod will find it useful in places where backcast space is limited but you still want to belt it out there. The GL3 is more affordable than most two-handed rods with this type of power and capability, making it a nice option for newcomers or anglers who don't fish as frequently.
