Report: Lots of fish in the river. The key is to get away from the people, that don't think standing in the river to there waist won't spook fish. There trout! We caught most of our fish this weekend in the seams in the faster water on egg sacks under floats chart and red.

Report: Since a few guys were looking for reports on the Oak....if you wanna go to the dam and watch 95%+ of the people throwing illegal rigs and snagging salmon be my guest. It does get entertaining when everyone yells good hook and the hooks in the tail, fin, a**, ect

Hiked downstream to find some less pressured fish and actually try to fish for them. No takers. A few smaller browns and steelies mixed in but nothing to brag about or justify a long drive to go back.

Report: Three of us took a day off from hunting and grabbed the fish poles. Really glad we did. We all hooked up on steelhead, kings, and a few fresh coho. More steelhead than I have ever seen. Also by 1:00 we had the whole river, up and down as far as we could see to ourselves. Some of the kings had very good color. So if you are getting bored with hunting or tagged out, the fishing is awesome. GO GET'EM!

Report: For Bucksaws2:
There are so many variables on setups for fly fishing. From water flow to time of year to species targeted, but it doesnt have to be confusing: Here is a general starting point.
10 foot 7 wt rod(you decide how much you want to spend)
Good reel with disc drag, again they range from $50-500
Weight forward floating flyline
leader cust back to 5 feet
tippet 3 feet
flies: egg immitations, stone fly immitations, minnow immitations, small natural nymphs, and the bright colorful attractor flies (cohos seem to like these the most)
How to attack the river: you should send me an email for a lengthier discussion on this. Each pool, run, species call for a different tactic, sometimes requiring a change. I'd be happy to discuss how I move around the river, and take different approaches to slay them each year. Catch and release for me though!

     10/22/2007 10:21:35 AM   Report ID: 20659

Report: Fished about 2 hours at sunrise and only hooked and landed 1 beat male king in the Black Hole and then did a little exploring further up on the river with not too much more luck.

As to the post saying the salmon rarely hit. I hooked 25+ this weekend (Fri-Sun) and only 4-5 were not right in the mouth where they should be.

I'm not trying to start an argument but if you downsize gear and present a natural drift of your bait they are more likely to hit for various reasons (agression, destroy competitors eggs, ect) Not all fish will but a good rule of thumb is about 1 in every 10 will.

If guys wanna go out an rip em and risk a ticket thats their choice but when I see lotsa trout being ripped into as well and guys start claiming they won't hit I just wanna scream. My buddy landed an 8lb steelie with a gash from its stomach to its top fin from where it was ripped through.

Report: We just got back from fishing the Salmon river. Lots of idiots with giant sinkers and throwing trash everywhere. That said, if your will ing to walk a little and not fish the pools with names you can get into some fish. As each passed the fising got better and the kings were fresh and not stopping for long, cohos still present but scarce, and the trout/steelhead action just picking up. I had 4 steely hookups and landed two. 15 lber, and a fat 18 lber. Bottom line is the conditions are never perfect, so go for it and have fun! We checked out the Sandy's after the rain but nothing coming up yet. Little Sandy had a few kings but lots of guys trying for them. Saw Nothing in the Grindstone. Seems like every year it gets less and less. I usually only head over that way in the fall...maybe spring is the time to look for steelhead in the grindstone?
Happy fishin!

Report: Well the Kings were running with the Steelies yesterday! Consistent run of fish throughout the day. Large numbers of steelies, many in the 12-15lb+ class. My partner and I landed a few 10 pounders, but many hookups with a lot of arial action. Only 1 brown seen all day. Kings were primarily black but still had fight.

Report: On the Little Salmon River. I saw mostly Chinook going upriver throughout the weekend. Fish were coming up in small groups of 2-4 at a time. The fish are much more lively and giving good fights when hooked up. There are quite a few "jacks" running up. Most of the females I saw taken are still "green" and moving steady without stopping. The rain and cloudy weather has helped alot, the fish are much more lively and still looking very fresh. Chinook size is down this year, averaging around 25 pounds. That is still a pretty fair poundage to deal with in the narrow width of the Little Salmon River. The Grindstone and Sage Creeks have plenty of water upstream but still showing few or no fish, but I believe some have got to be getting through.

Report: Ok I've had enough of the people complaining about the usual lifters/slobs/etc.WE KNOW!!!! The real story is that my wife and I had the best day since August with numerous fish seen and hooked. From 7 in the morning till we left at 6 that evening. The kings were not beat up, they fought real well, some cleared 30 pounds on my scale, and they were all released. This is the main run. If you don't believe this go to yankeeangler.com. I hope I helped you all with a real report. Good luck though now it's not really needed!(FINALLY)

Report: As indicated in the previous entry, arm to arm crowds handling the spirts of mostly Kings running up through the blackhole. Weather looking good (haha) for the next few days, cold and raining, just what we need to thin the crowds (novices), and move the fish. Quick question, does anyone know where to locate the written rules/laws of the SR? Ie leader length, hook size, snagging, lifting rules? I am also frustrated with the barbaric actions of some, maybe I can change some mindsets with link to the info.

     10/10/2007 10:27:51 AM   Report ID: 20501

Report: Monday morning saw hundreds of King/Chinook coming up. It was non-stop for about 2-3 hours. Fish looked in good shape. The fishhead hordes got the word somehow and descended in droves. Saw more than one group going to court with a DEC Officer escort. Frenzied snagging, stomping, kicking the fish seemed the order of the day. Many of the Kings were females and where "green". The male to female ratio is way off from normal, like 5 females to 1 male king, very strange. After the sun got on the stream full on, the run stopped like someone flipped a switch. Saw very few fish (less than a dozen) come upstream after noontime. There are very few COHO, STEELHEAD and BROWN TROUT mixed in with the KINGS/CHINOOK. The water temp is still in the high 60's low 70's, the expected rise in water level from rain is not happening. Need more rain and cooler temps.

Report: well I tried it..the conditions were terrible super low 100cfs, if you didn't fish below the ball park (which was shoulder to shoulder) you didn't fish, some of the holes in the upper part did hold fish, but they were very spooky and exhausted from the runing of the gauntlet.. the snaggers were out in droves (disgusting) especially the family who's father was teaching his kids how to snag!! my only hope is his own kids snag his b*lls so he can't reproduce anymore! LOL anyone who is thinking about it don't waste your time its lousy.. DSR was sold out for both days @30.00 a pop times that by 300 people for a 2 1/2 mile stretch talk about capitalizing on the conditions. PRAY to the Rain GODS!!!

Report: We walked across above the Chute for the first time in years without interlocking arms with 4 guys. Fishing looked good to me. Saw limits, pairs, and lotsa Steelhead leaving on stringers, just not mine. Struck out this time but got away which is always the #1 goal. Enjoyed watching the 50lb test guys at the Ballfield slap hook to a 20lber that never took an inch of line from there 6ft deep sea rod. Alot of spot and stalk going on at the Ballfield almost comical, as it turned into running and slinging. I stood next to "Santa Claus" with a long grey pony tail in the Upper Chute. He was in the prime spot on our hole as practically every Salmon up through, would recover in the pool then slide right in front of him. He was dragging heavy every day. The fish are definitely there!

Report: Legally fished using flies and eggsacks with
6 brothers/friends.
Fished The Salmon River at the Town Hole and
the Oswego River on the lock side of the
river.
Both rivers were very low, very warm (60degrees)
and the fish didn't seem to want to hit on
anything.
Only fish I saw caught on the Oswego River was
at the dam where the small gate is open.
It was a snagging orgy and even then, the locals
said it was a bad year.
We only managed to catch not much more than
an attitude.
Just a bad year. I'm readying myself for
next year.

Report: Fished and watched the river all weekend. Watched a few BROWN TROUT slowly working their way upstream. I did not see any COHO. A very few female CHINOOK worked their way upstream, still mostly silver in color. But would "spend" themselves in 20-50 feet when hooked up. Watched others literally dying as they made their way upstream. Caught a couple of males. The male/female ratio is way off at this time. Water is very warm and has dropped to less than a foot deep on average since the rain quit. Worst year I've ever seen for numbers, size and survivability for this time of year. The smaller streams are not doing well, I saw no fish in Grindstone, Sage, Deer Creek. Stopped by the Redfield Reservoir and have never seen it that low in my life (I am in my late 50's).

Report: Got out on the water around 530 in the morning. Was the first in the water. Used real egg sacs for about an hour, caught two trash fish, then went to plastic egg sacs, and got zero hits. Switched to cloth egg sacs, got zero hits. Walked across the river, and down around the bend and saw lots and lots of snagging goin' on. Vacated the premises with zero fish for the day, not much better at Dexter either. Had much better luck at Price Chopper, haha.

Report: Fished the Firemens lot today,(above ballpark)and was greeted by spurts of kings and coho all day.Numerous hookups, landed some lost some. Talked to a friend that fished there the day before and said they were nose to tail all day.Another guy I talked to had the same success at the 2a bridge. At 4:30 the sky opened up and poured. As I drove home through the deluge and got home to write this, the river is getting hammered by rain. Wish I could be there tomorrow! Good luck it should be good.
