Report: Students from Family Tyes took their first trip to Erie on Monday and were thrilled to see so many steelhead in such a small area. We were fishing the stream just off Rt. 5 and began our fishing at about 10 am. The water was not as low as I first feared but low and clear none the less. We landed a few fish on Woolybuggers and have a few more on but lost most. Caught and landed a 28 inch male that kept us under a fallen tree for 10 minutes and a 24 inch female. The kids were wide eyed as can be expected and looking forward to our next trip.

Report: Wow, Erie has provided me with another great memory. After fishing Friday without sucess I headed north stopping at several creeks along the way. 6 mile stopped before the lake! I eventually made it to 20 mile. It WAS loaded with fresh fish when I got there around lunch. As we walked in I saw several anglers walking out with stringers of fish. Some of the stringers had more than three fish! Some had some very interesting marks in there tails and bodies. But I digress. I started fishing along the wall with a black woolly bugger and landed a 26" female. After she destroyed that I swithed to a soft hackled pheasant tail and caught a 25" female. At 4:45 I hooked a 29" male on a red squirrel nymph. It did not net him until 5:30. I guess this is what happens when you can only use 6x tippet. Please forgive me fellow anglers I took all three fish home. This was my only trip to Erie this year and damn-it, I like smoked steelhead. Please tell the local WCO to check out this creek. Many anglers were snagging fish. Good luck and pray for rain.

Report: My son and I went to Elk expecting a good day..and thats exactly what we got. After dozens of hookups and a few landed fish. They were mostly taken on egg sacs and mini foos/wmaggot drifted slowly through the pools turned out to be the ticket...get up there soon, the fishing is GREAT!

Date Fished: 11/21 - 11/23 , 1998
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Got to elk creek on Saturday morning at around 9:30AM. LARGE anglers on the river! Began fishing the slow water down near the launch. We saw about three fish hooked while fishing there. Moved up river shortly thereafter. Once again lots of guys fishing the extremely shallow water. Plenty of fish in the holes but very spooked. Finally at the hole halfway between route 5 and the railway bridge we hooked into some fish.
Saturday was way too crowded, and therefore sucked pretty bad.
Walnut was crazy as well. Saw a few fish being caught there but nothing spectacular.
Sunday morning on Elk, at the same hole above route 5 we hooked 6 fish between three of us by 9:00. The rest of the day was slow except for one of us down near the logs at the mouth stretch. He hooked 8 steelies there and landed five of them.
Monday morning again was decent at the hole we fished the previous morning. The three of us hooked 9 fish and put on a bit of a clinic to the local fisherman.
We ended up landing 18 of 37 hooked on the weekend. Every one of those fish were released to fight another day. It would be great if some of the other anglers practiced this as well. We enjoyed ourselves, good luck to all....and see ya next year!!!!!!

Report: went to walnut two weeks ago and hooked up with two steelhead. both about 25 inches. caught them both on minifoos. I had to weasel my way into manchester hole. it cracks me up how 25 guys can stand in the hole below manchester and bounce flys off the heads of the 15 fish for hours. i also landed a nice one near the mouth of elk tossing around a cleo. i'll be heading back up this friday so i would appreciate all you orange hats to stay home that day. there must be somthing about guys who wear orange hats while fishing because they are the most ignorant people there.good fishing to all....except orange hats. HOOK ON!!!

Report: Caught two nice sized fish on bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. My partner caught two on a black peacock hearl bead head. We each had numerous hook-ups and the weather was great. The water was clear and the fish were sort of spooky. Used #12-#16 nymphs and I think that the small size was the key. Get out and good luck.

Report: What a day! Water a little low but plenty of fish at the mouth and in the big hole in the park. Used a variation of the peacock roadkill fly and really went to town. Use extreme patience and stay low so as not to spook these big boys. Everyone at the creek was hooking up frequently. It was like these fish had never been fished to this year. Unbelievable day. I'll be back very very soon.

Type of Report: Stream
Report: Sunday morning I fished Elk in the access area along the cliff between the parking lot and the lake. The action was very slow, although I saw three fish caught. Fish could be seen jumping. It was one of those frustrating days when you know the fish are there but they just were not hitting. By 11 a.m. the crowds were pretty thin.

Also checked out Trout Run. The wind had kicked-up pretty good waves, and only two people were fishing the lake. It too looked slow. There was a decent crowd in the "pigpen", and it too looked slow.

Report: We had a pretty good day today on Walnut creek. We went at dawn and the fishing was hot in the early morning hours. It was great to get the oppurtuntiy to fish with more fish around than fishermen. We had success on the roadkill and pheasant nymphs. We caught five in all, and we fished the pool between the mouth and the Manchester. If you are going to go at dawn I suggest using something small to keep from spooking the fish for as long as possible. The fish feed during this time, but they have a tendency to get a little wary when they are being dive bombed by size #1 treble hooks.

Report: Started the day at trout run beach, things were a little slow and discovered a leak in my waders. The lake was flat so I went over to Elk Creek access. Started fishing at 8:00AM about 200 yards from the mouth. I hooked a large steelhead and lost him on a little cleo which was blue and silver. I had several other hits on this same cleo. I could not get any interest on any other spoons or spinners. Blue seems to be the color of preference. At 2:00 PM I moved to the area just above the boat launch. Things were pretty slow but was able to land one large male at 5:00 and lost one earlier. I was using a small portion of skeen at this time. You need to work hard for your fish and be patient. Good luck and keep your comments coming. This is a great web site.

Report: Fished Elk creek about 30 yards from the access towards lake under the pine trees. Fish were jumping everywhere in the creek. Saw many hook ups. There were about 10 guys in the first big hole to the right of the access with many hooked. Although Elk seemed to be loaded with fish, I only hooked one on a Little Phoebe spoon (Blue/Silver)1/4 oz. size. It was the largest Steelhead I have caught in 3 years of Erie fishing (13.8lbs). It was a dark male that put up a great fight which made the trip worthwhile. Tried the lake too at Elk but no hookups.... I have had great success with "Little Phoebe" spoons - much more than other brands. The same with trout fishing...

Report: Best fishing in years.Lot's of fish in the pigpen and not many fishermen Friday eve and Saturday morning. hooked around 40 fish on saturday.Maggots about 3 feet below a bobber seemed to be the ticket.Fellow fishermen were very courteos.I was very pleased.Sunday morning was another story though.Hooked 11 on maggots, but the wind was terrible. Also the slob fishermen moved back in.No respect for others, crowding into the spot you're fishing when there is plenty of other water, and just not enjoyable.Oh well, two good days were memorable. Thanks again to the gentleman that netted my son's big steelhead on Friday. He's still talking about it.One other thought. With all the problems at Manchester hole, how about making it an area for young children. They could experience the thrill of steelhead fishing without the problems caused by their inexperience and the ignorance of others.Maybe even catch and release or a reduced bag limit for them.WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Report: We left Pittsburgh Thursday night and got to Walnut at about 3:00AM. A couple of nice guys gave us their spot right next to the launch as they were leaving. We got our first fish at at about 6:45AM. She was a little over 8 lbs and about 23.5 inches long, and hit on green Power Bait. The second and third fish were at about 7:30AM and 8:15AM. Both of these fish were around 8 lbs and within an inch of the first. At 9:00AM we did not see another fish caught till the sun came out at about 10:45AM. The guys next to us were catching small ones with black Mini-Foos and maggots. We caught one more, smaller fish, around 11:00AM on an eggsac. We had a great time and everyone we talked to and fished with was very nice and very helpful (Netting and Bait tips). For how touch and go the fishing has been recently, Friday the 13th was a lucky Steel Head day.

Report: We fished walnutz(that's right "walNUTZ" because that's what it is, NUTZ. 30 people bouncing minifoos of the noses of about 30 steelhead in a pool of water the size of a plastic baby pool, and probably not much deeper) on friday night and saturday. Leo caught two in the manchester hole while standing butts to elbows. The marinal at walnutz appeared to be doing well when there wasn't any arguing going on. It's funny how everyone thinks they have the secret bait to catch all the fish. Plenty of "I all out for myself screw everyone else type of guys up there". Did meet a few nice guys though. Elk i is a nice creek to fish. Still rather crowded and windy. Flav missed a big mumma on a blue and silver cleo, so if anyone catches one by the mouth in elk you can please send it flav in pittsburgh. Managed to avoid being skunked by fishing with a couple of nice kids in the tubes at elk. Had a good time but will not be back up until the fish have enough water to move upstream. Love zinging them cleos. HOOK ON! YEOW!

Report: fished elk this past weekend... Has anyone ever heard of catch and release... With the waters so low, all the fish are being caught out of the lower portions of the streams... Do people realize that this resource isn't going to be around forever if people keep snagging and/or taking all the fish from the streams...
Anyways, fished up above rt. 5 on elk Saturday... caught 6 steelhead... biggest one was 8lb 3oz male... looked like he had been in the streams a while... Sunday, we ventured up above legion park trying to get away from the crowds... There weren't many fish that high... just wanted to get away from the motto crowds of erie....

Report: Found the weather great- little rain on Sat Night the waters were clear on Elk Creek and found some fish in some of the holes. I decided I was not a bad fisherman but one that was unlucky. I put everything I had right at there nose and didn't even get a bite. But it was nice just to be there and very few other fisherman around. The pig pen, well there were fish being caught but not by me. My bad fisherman theory was tried again I was right- just unlucky TODAY. Anyway, it was fun and met a lot of nice people and SAW a LOT of nice fish!

Report: We had a really good day on Walnut on Saturday. We settled in the stop sign pool and stayed there most of the day. There weren't to many people so the fishing was relatively good. We used the roadkill again and it continues to be the hot fly this fall. We landed about ten out of the pool. I did manage to catch a female that weight about 11 pounds. I took me for an unbelievable ride, and I haven't had that much fun in a while. Upon landing it we took a couple pictures, and began to revive her after the fight. Several people asked we what the hell I was doing and I said that I was releasing her. One person asked if they could have it. That is not the point, the fish should be left in the stream. How could I kill the fish that gave me so much enjoyment! Leave them there for another day fun! The thrill of the catch is better than the meal.

Fish were hitting mini foos that were black with yellow eye. At approximately 4:00pm, we fished 100 yards north of the RR tubes. I caught a 10# male and several other fresh females. My cousing landed a nice male. They were devouring egg sacs and single eggs. Within the hour, five fish landed, and several dozen lost.

Report: Since I read this page too often and fish too little, I felt obligated to offer a report! Fished both Walnut (AM) and Elk (PM) below and around Route 5 using sucker spawn of various colors (color not important, light leader was). Caught some nice steelhead in both locations. Conditions: Walnut: The already low water levels were falling and nearly clear by late morning. Elk: Also low and clear, with water level visibly falling. Prognosis: unless it rains again, you will be fishing very low, clear water conditions on both streams, for fish that saw fairly intense angling pressure yesterday.

Report: Walnut Creek has fish in good numbers up to Route 5...

Elk Creek had good populations of fish at the upstream side of the Conrail Tubes and probably even up to the RR trestle above Whitman's Bridge (not confirmed)

The PFBC is securing an additional portable toilet for the southern end of the south parking lot. Huge crowds completely overwhelmed the one unit by the basin. Additionally, whenever possible, the main building at Walnut will have restrooms open from 8 am till 3 pm. This is subject to employee availability for this task.

Wco Carter reports that Twenty Mile Creek also has a run of fish in it from the rain.

Report: The roadkill does it again! Had a great day of fly-fishing at twenty mile creek today. We went around noon after class, and the mouth of the creek was really windy. This proved to be a great advantage to fishing. It drove all of the other fisherman away, but it made for some great fishing. If you could cast through the wind, the fish would hit it. We fished with the tan and orange roadkill which has proved to be very effective this fall. We caught 8 in all and had a great time. Hopefully some rain will improve the fishing conditions soon, but until then the wind will do just fine.

Report: Thought it was going to be another great day with the rain we got, but the fish did not come. Saw very few steelies caught above and below manchester. Three of us hooked 25 and landed about 14. Of those landed 6 were salmon including a nice 8# male. Saw maybe 20 fish caught besides ours. With the lack of rain I was sure the run would be huge. I did see some large steelies caught below the bridge. Went to the marina and saw at least 100 guys and only 4 fish on stringers. The 6 ft plus waves must have kept the fish out. I cant believe somone actually was able to cast at trout!!!! Three guys told us they went and couldnt get near the surf. Water was slightly up and very muddy with tons of leaves. by noon water was dropping fast and clearing as well. We need alot more rain.... When i drove up 98 over elk it looked very low and not to muddy. I guess by thursday well be back to low clear water, this weekend for sure. maybe elk was better, walnut was poor for getting a good rain..... was surprised to catch that many salmon, mostly jacks about 3#. caught most on egg sacks.
good luck,

Report: Stream was low and clear. No fish at rte 5 could be found. Ended up going to about 1/4 mile from the creek mouth of lake erie.

Fishing pressure was high but the fish were everywhere! Fished along stone embankment on east side of stream where channel was present.

Could see fish move through my spot. People were on either side. But it did not matter as black or white mini foos worked with or without the bobber.

Had numerous strikes through the day. eight or nine in all. Ended catching my two fish limit on both Friday and Saturday.

My partner also caught a 4.5 lb brown trout steel head wannabee --- beautiful fish.

Steelhead were of all colors from purple to silver with red stripes. 6 to 8 lb average.

Some fish dove deep others were acropatic jumpers.

It certainly was a wonderful time!

I even saw one youngster with nothing but a large trebile hook! These fish are amazing, and it really diappointing to see the total lack of sportmanship. We have had some luck with a fly known as the roadkill, also a pink and white sucker spawn seems to work as well. Took a thirty inch, eight pounder at the tubes a few weeks ago, but the fishing has been slow because of the lack of rain. Pray for rain and report the snaggers!

Report: What a great week of fishing. Made my annual trip up north this week. The weather was a far cry from Alabama's. But the fishing more than made up for it. I started out the week fishing the elk. There was tons of people but the fish were really stacked in the lower part of the stream. You just had to be persistant. Caught most of my fish off singles and redworms, also a few on jigs. By Friday all the talk was about the Walnut Marina. After being there for five minutes I could see why. Fish were being caught continuously. In two hours I caught 3 on jigs and 1 on blue+silver cleo. Ended week landing 27 and hooking up alot more. Biggest fish 8 pounds. C-ya next fall.

Location: Walnut Boat Basin
Date Fished: 11/4 ... thru 11/7/98
Type of Report: Stream
Report: The basin at Walnut Access is the "hottest" spot ever. Black mini-foo jigs with 3 or 4 maggots floated with a bobber or silver & blue foil spoons are both extremely effective.

It just doesn't get any better fishing than this is. .... Be sure to stop at the Stop Sign entering the property. Strict enforcement continues due to near misses involving anglers crossing the road to walk to Manchester Hole & back.

Location: elk
Date Fished: 11\4\98
Type of Report: Stream
Report: It is no surprise to many steelhead fisherman that elk remains unusually low. Consequently, the fish are not widely distributed which creates congestion at the mouth. Fish are being caught near the lake but it's not a pretty sight. The fish are badly outnumbered and many anglers are not showing restraint under conditions that make the fish vulnerable to unscrupulous techniques. One can only justify the "sport" of fishing by some reasonable ethical standard. What a vulgar end for such magnificent creatures.

Location: Conneaut Creek
Date Fished: 11/1
Type of Report: Stream
Report: I must have thrown everything but my tackle box at these fish, did get one hit on a blue, silver and orange ratl trap. Mostly people are there with spawn sacs and jigs with maggots on bobbers - boring. Though every once in a while someone gets one.

I did go out on the breakwall and the fish appear to be staging out there since the H20 level is so low in the Creek. Lots of nice fish coming out. REALLY CROWDED THOUGH. Bring your armor, kids and moms casting for the first time are a plenty!!

Location: Conneaut, Ohio & Walnut Creek
Date Fished: Nov. 4th
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Perch fishing is hot right now off of Conneaut Lighthouse. They are located 1&1/2 miles north of harbor entrance in 52' of water. Anglers report less than 2 hours to land 60 perch. (Ohio limit is 30)

Walnut Creek basin is open to fishing this afternoon as the docks are scheduled to be removed by then. A portable toilet is located against the white building at the end of the boat launch ramps.

Numerous anglers continue to report violations of slobs snagging or taking over their limit of fish. It is most helpful if a description of their vehicle is given (make, color, year, registration #) Most of these people are habitual offenders and if we miss them this time... they always come back. My office # is (814) 774-0928. While it is helpful to leave your name & # in case there are additional questions... it is not necessary.

Location: Pigpen
Date Fished: 11-3-98 9:30am
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Winds 20mph+ with 3'+ waves lake non-fishable -so we fished the pigpen for a few hours. Hooked one nice steelhead on a medium size "Little Phoebe" spoon (silver/blue). Saw a few hooked but only one caught. Three guys had one or more on stringer from before sunrise. Took a drive to the mouth of Racoon creek to find only a trickle of water flow. We did see about 3 or 4 large steelies mixed with approx. 1000+ stockies from the mouth to the bridge. Took a few casts but kept catching the small stockies so we went to the conrail tressels at Elk. There were quite a few fish at the tubes end - but so spooked with four guys throwing everything in the low & clear water. This was our first trip this year - I was glad to at least catch one considering the conditions.

Location: Elk Creek Access
Date Fished: 10/31, 11/2
Type of Report: Stream
Report: My first steelhead experiences! What a circus! The fishing is quite and experience, and if you are a newcomer as I was, go with a lot of patience. Some people have no problems crowding you over. Everyone is looking for one of those beauties, but go with a lot of restraint. What an experience, though, to cast your line in and actually be AFRAID one of those hawgs would bite! LOW WATER + HEAVY TRAFFIC = SLOW FISHING.......
