August 1999

Location: 5 mi. north of Walnut Creek Access
Date Fished: 8/28-8/29
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Fishing was very good on Friday and Saturday. The walleye have really arrived. Caught 15 on Sat. and one steelie, almost all on downriggers 50-60' down, 150' back using stinger jigs-they could not resist them. Would have limited out easily with three but we had electrical problems and had to go back to fix the boat. We'll get them again next time. Good Fishing.

Report: Can anyone please give me an accurate report of the stream conditions of elk and walnut creeks. Is it worth coming up for the steelhead fishing yet? Are the fish stacked up waiting for a nice rainfall to enter the streams? Have any nice fish been caught this season yet? What are the best baits for this time of year? I appreciate any accurate report you can give me. Best of luck on the streams this year. Remember, your actions on the streams affect everyone. Please respect the streams so that everyone can enjoy steelhead fishing for many years to come.

Date Fished: August
Type of Report: Stream
Report: This will be our first year of seriously fishing for steelhead in the Erie streams. I would appreciate any information regarding when they typically begin returning to the streams. I assume it is when the water levels increase and temps cool down. I'm not sure if this begins in late August/early September or later.

Thanks.

Report: I would like some information on smallmouth fishing in the fall. Do they group up in the Lake and/or come into the Bay like they do in the spring? When is the best time or conditions to plan a weekend? Do the same methods work in the fall as in the spring? Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

Location: Mouth of Trout Run
Date Fished: Thursday, August 26
Type of Report: Stream
Report: An inspection of Trout Run at its mouth on Thursday evening, August 26, found no steelhead in the creek and no one fishing the lake there, even though it was calm. Trout Run is very low.

There were probably 10 people fishing along the wall at the mouth of Walnut. I saw no action the short time I was there, but I did see a two small, probably jack steelhead or coho in the low water there.

Despite more rain today, Walnut is still very low. In what was the shallow area in the middle of the creek just downstream from the Manchester hole and just upstream from the first bridge, it is now bone dry and grass is growing.

Location: Pt. & PA/Ohio Line
Date Fished: August 7-14th
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Fished for a week...
Numerous things to communicate...
First, The PA/OH line (Aug 7th)- lots of baitfish/big eyes. Fished middle of second trench and worked north.. Big Dipsies & Riggers - Colors seemed to be BL/Purple,Fire Tiger,Copper/Pink.. Set lines back 225 of riggers and set them up off bottom 10-15 ft. Dipsies(big) 2 setting- 185 back.
Fished most my days off the pt./launched from Lampe. Fishing was spotty... Fished the 888-890 line and 430-470 (loran), or what I use a GPS 42.14.50&80.11.00....
Dipsies worked best.. (big) 2 setting 150 & 175 back.. Smalls 2 setting 225 back..
Riggers caught big fish.. same deal 225 back and between 10-15 ft. from bottom.Same colors as other days, watermelon was on/off.. I think they are seeing too much of it.. experiment.. I did - You will be suprised!!
Fished total of 6/8 days (2 blowoffs) avg. 8 fish a day... (2-4 guys)
If I was going back up, I would try off Walnut between 7-9 miles out(355 bearing)...just a hunch...
Anybody interested in more details, please email.. Good Fishing !!!

Type of Report: Lake
Report: After watching the lake blow with 6 footers friday,2-4foot was predicted, the weather service was calling for it to lay down Sat. It would be great to be wrong 50 percent of the time and still have a job! well they got it right Sat.Made the 4:30am run to the PA.OHIO bouder, marked a tremendous amount of baitfish. These walleyes do not have to come any futher east all the is food there.Trolled around the 888to892-280to290 line and keeped circling the area picked up 10 nice eyes in the 5-7# range, had numerous knockoffs and lost a half dozen fish,it is real hard trying to reel the fish, drive the boat, net the fish, keep everything straight when 2 and 3 rods are going off at the same time,a real old fashion chinese fire drill.Big and small dipsy with crawler harnesses is the ticket. By the way I am the new sheephead catching king! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Location: Foot of cascade st.
Date Fished: aug. 5
Type of Report: Bay
Report: Caught about 30 fish. Mostley nice size crappie, one 14in perch, and some baby bass. Caught 2 crappie weighing about 1 to 1 1/2 pound on a tiny plastic shad, blue color with black dot. All rest of crappie were mainly average size caught mostly on tiny curly tail grub. Also caught a little white bass (man did he fight for his size!)First white bass I have heard caught in this area, I guess they don't get as much as attention as walleyes, steelhead, and smallmouth. Good Fishing! Mike
