Location: Northeast of Presque Isle Bay
Date Fished: 8/27/98
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Fished roughly 10 miles northeast of
the bay in 80 to 90 ft. of water. Began marking
bait in the early 80 ft. range and the bait
increased greatly the deeper I went. Although I
only caught two walleye, I hooked into at least six
others that threw the hook before being boated.
Considering I only fished for about six hours and
much of the time was spent locating the fish, I
feel confident that plenty of walleye are present
for the taking. I picked up both fish off a slider
on a medium sized NK black and gold. The 10lb. ball
was set at 66 ft. and I was trolling around 2.2
mph. The other hookups were off a gold and black
big dipsey set on the two setting. A green/yellow
wormharness with a chartreuse blade did the trick
for me, but I didn't have a lot of time to
experiment so I'm certain other combinations may be
even better. Again the trolling speed was just over
2.0 mph. If you take heed of this report, don't be
afraid to venture deeper than I did, because the
further I wented the more bait I marked. They are
there, so good fishing.

Location: North and West of Walnut Creek
Date Fished: 8/22, 8/23
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Contrary to the previous bad
reports, fishing off of Walnut was fairly decent
this weekend. We caught 15 keeper Walleye on Sat.
and 14 on Sun. Smallest was 18" but the majority
were 22" to 26". Caught tons of sheephead and
whitebass and whiteperch. Also caught many 13" to
15 1/2" walleyes that we threw back. Fished from
the 405 / 883 to 879 360. Anywhere in between those
numbers we caught fish. 55' to 74' of water.
Dipsies, riggers, and weighted board lines all
caught fish. If you need a more specific report or
have one to share with me, e-mail me at

Location: East of Walnut
Date Fished: Sat., August 22
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Fished off the condos at the
entrance of the Peninsula (east of Walnut). Started
in 58 feet, and went out to 70. There were boats
everywhere, but practically no action. Did not see
a single fish put on any boat. Tried dipseys and
downriggers, near the bottom and up to 30 feet,
with crawlers and lures. The report was 1 foot
waves. Out deep the waves were 2 to 3 footers, with
an occassional big roller. Surprisingly, there was
a lot less action at the Walnut Creek Access Area
than expected. The lot was only about half full on
Saturday morning. Please leave reports if you read
this, so we all have some idea what's going on out
there. I think today we all could have saved a lot
of gas if we stayed home.

Location: Misery Bay
Date Fished: August 12, 1998
Type of Report: Bay
Report: Fished the edges of Misery Bay with
large bladed bass spinerbaits and caught three
northern pike in the lower to mid 20 inch range.
The fishing was really slow until about 7:30pm and
then it just exploded. There were numerous other
short strikes that didn't result in a caught fish.
A trailer hook will surely be helpful with this
next trip out. I also caught a few nice bass in the
3lb range.

Location: Walnut Creek & Northeast
Date Fished: Aug 8 & 9
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Fished out of Walnut Creek on Sat
Aug 8. SE Wind, light chop in early AM but weakened
later. had small boat so did not go offshore where
the walleye were reportedly being taken at 100' of
water. Fished to 50' and only caught a few
smallmouth, sheephead, and perch. No walleye.
Enjoyable anyway - had nephew and his son who was
on first lake trip. Did well. Went out of NorthEast
on Sunday - same small boat, weather like Sat.
Fished out to 60' of water. Reports were walleye
were being caught at 110' water suspended around
40' to 50'. Caught a few smallmouth and several
nice perch in 40' to 60' of water in AM, then when
wind shifted slightly and clouded over around 1:30,
started geting more hits which lasted for an hour
or two. Caught several very large sheephead,
several perch, and one keeper walleye in 45' to 50'
of water trolling 5' off bottom. Chartruese willow
leaf with harness for the walleye. Water very warm,
but still clear with no bloom noticed. Not many
baitfish seen in shore. Prefer fishing with my
smaller boat in 30' to 50' of water, so packing it
up for this year and will try to get back to lake
when surface temp is around 70 deg next
spring/summer.
